Broke Hoodlatch = Sunk Ski

Out on the lake today messing around I went to do a roll and didn't make it all the way around and ended up I landing on the side. I could feel something wrong then thats when I realized my ski was sinking. It sunk FAST at this point I didn't know why I thought I ripped the pole bracket out. Then I realized my WCF hood wasn't on so as the ski is sinking I am trying to recover the hood and get someone to come over. The only part not in the water was the end of the tray thanks to the foam. I blew my whistle and a couple came over when we started to drag the ski I and got me to the ramp where I was able to find what happened. The Hood Latch bent (Look below) and the hood straps BROKE! Once I got it on the trailer I turned in on its side removed the head and hit the starter. I did that a few times but knowing water was still in the lower case but not knowing how much water was in the case. I didn't want to put the head back on and try to start it due to the fear of bending a rod. I got home at 6 motor was out at 7. I tore the motor down clys have a good coat of oil and the crank is sitting in a bath of oil so no rust for me. I am posting this so everyone checks their latch so the same doesn't happen to them. What I am thinking happened is the screw that holds the bar in and keeps it centered came out and then the bar was no longer centered and the force bent the latch. All in all I am lucky no damage happened to my ski other then the latch and the straps. Engine should be fine now and the hull and hood have no damage.

Next time you sink it (YOU WILL!!!), do your reeds a favor and turn the crank slowly by hand a couple of times before hitting the starter.

Opps I left that part out. I did that just to make sure the crank wasn't binding and would turn so when I hit the started it didn't mess up more. I didn't know that about the reeds tho. THANKS!

I thought it was trying to sink so I was able to get it some what under the poll and kept pulling the poll down so I wouldn't loose the hood. I didn't want to find out if the hood floated or not.

if you sink a ski again, pull the plugs, roll the ski to the exhaust side, start cranking over, one, your reeds are no longer in danger, the water will run out the exhaust when you start to crank the motor over along with blow out the plug holes, do this over and over, then start putting the plugs in, even try just one plug, get the motor running asap...... even in your case you cannot ride it, put it on the trailer and let it idle (faster idle, turn up the idle) and let it heat the engine up and get all the bearings coated and water displaced, just removing the engine and pulling cylinders does not get all the moisture out of the crank bearings and wrist pin beeaings....

I've got a billet 24-7 latch. it's held up great. I ride a fixed steering conversiosn hood so I'm way harder on a hood latch than a normal stand up rider.

Those and the Blowsion latches are the best, the Wamiltons is just stamped steel, not the greatest. better than OEM but still not the best.

I didn't just remove the engine I took the engine apart the crank is sitting in a bucket of oil. I didn't just pull the motor to drain it I took it apart and gave the crank a dip in an oil bath. As of right now the crank is still sitting in the bucket of oil and the crank is covered 100% by oil no part of the crank is showing.

for future reference ingesting water does not require a complete tear down of your motor...just get it running and ride it around for 20 min or so and your good..
