when i went with a smaller battery i twisted the rubber straps until they were as tight as they originally fit. Don't know if that will work on the tank or not. I think I have seen some guys leave the empty tank in there to take up the space.

just becareful how far forward you cut. You need to watch the exhaust tube. If you cut too far forward you may run into it.

well, not really from the engine, from the intermediate bearing housing. But, yes that length of shaft should all come out with the pump. Mine stuck pretty good before too, make sure you are pulling it back a straight as possible. Make sure to put good marine grease back on the splines before...

I tried using the 2 bolt set up without a spring... I didn't like the way that felt at all. I put the spring back in, and figured it out, I think, so everything seems to be good now.

Thanks... yeah, I thought the same thing and actually removed 3" from just below the bend, so I kept the same basic shape of the pole, just shorted it from the straight length.
