you need to ohm out the wires from your s/s to ground. figure out which one is shorting to ground and blowing the fuse when you hit start. the fuse actually does feed the starter solenoid so something between your switch and the stater solenoid is shorted. you can also test your starter...

You could glass some inserts onto the bottom of the hull. I hate doing stuff like that, thats why I did the aluminum plate thing with the existing inserts.
