The hulls are painted to begin with, so it's far easier to just paint them. Gelcoat would be a royal pain in the arse...

The initial post was so we are talking about what peoples definition is, not what is generally used in the market. And yes, I do believe that you can freeride in places other than surf, and that freestyle competitions take place in the ocean also.

I would have to agree with the DR and DJ on this one. I don't think you need waves to Freeride... To me, Freeriding is being out on the water, ripping it up, and becoming one with the ski in harmony with the water... Freestyle = rules, judging, competition, set tricks, regimented...

Make sure you take the tension off your torque wrench by backing it off to 0 after every use. If you keep it set and store it, the internal spring becomes weak overtime and will give you WAY bad readings. Also, get them calibrated at least every two years regardless of the amount of use.
