Windows 7 - grrr already

I've started deploying Windows 7 Professional on new computers and so far have 3 in the company---mine, the general manager, and the plant manager her at the main plant.

Today, the plant manager came in and **most** of his desktop icons/shortcuts are gone, like vanished into thin air. Not in the recycle bin, not hidden, not moved, just gone. I'm baffled right now and googling feverishly.

Weird, just weird.

So far this is the only issue I've had.

I never adopted Vista but Win7 is fine really. There is no compelling reason to switch to it or to stay with XP either way, so might as well get 7 on the new computers because XP will go away eventually.

Do you allow Microsoft auto updates? I can't imagine you do but if you do I would suspect one of them messed up the ball game as usual.

I don't allow anything auto on anything...except whatever anti-virus I am using....

I have seen that happen on XP FWIW......still don't know why years later.

Looks like it's a task that runs 1am on Sunday and one of the functions it does is it removes 'broken' shortcuts from the desktop. Not just put them in a folder, but removes them completely. I'll have to disable that task via group policy I guess.

It only happened on that one machine because it was the only one turned on at that time, the other 2 were off.

Why the heck would Microsoft think this is a good idea?

I went with Vista in my home Laptop just to get a feel for it should I need to support it down the road and other than a few "quirks" it works okay. Nothing really spectacular enough to sway me away from XP other than staying up to date though.

Now with the release of Win7 I'm seriously thinking about scrapping Vista and moving on to 7, just waiting to hear more about it.

I was told Vista was horrible until after the first major revision, where is Win7 in that regard?

Yea clean installs only here as well. Upgrades absolutely suck and should not even be sold.

Thanks for the heads up Jett.....I will have to watch for this crap.

Why in the world does MS feel the need to do something like that!!??

Just kill the entire task manager service? At least!

Did you pick those "guinea pigs" or they came to you requesting Win7?
At my Company the upper Management always wants the latest before everyone else but can't deal with the frustration if they have issues....

"I have a dept. to run and I cannot have my Laptop like this....blah, blah.."

I hope those managers can deal with the issues.

p.s: We have Banned Win7 company wide until further testing....and we haven't even started testing.....LOL!

They were both up for new laptops, so I just went with it. I buy HP laptops/desktops and they come with XP installed but have the disks for 7 (Vista previously) so since these 2 guys are pretty laid back and easy to work with, they're perfect to start rolling it out on.

So far this is the only real issue. A small annoyance is for my less-pc-inclined people that their isn't a second dedicated icon in the taskbar for VPN connections, so I expect that to be an issue for a while. It's just not that obvious if you're connected or not to our VPN so I'm sure I'll get calls on that.

Yea that is weird....its not like VPN's are going anywhere. WHY!!!????

What version are you rolling with?

Oh nevermind....I see....man pro should have that for sure!

Windows 7 won't have any of the security issues of any previous version of Windows, Trust Me.

I lol at at you xp guys. its a 7 year old technology. Most people replace their pcs every 2-3 years b/c of how fast technology advances. I believe is more of a pc literate issue than a OS issue.

I have a customer that is getting several new PCs with XP and a 7 upgrade coupon. They wanted to start with XP and upgrade to 7 later. I told them that it was a risky way of thinking and that they were asking for trouble. I am going to go ahead and bring a couple of them up to 7 and hope my Vista compatible app works so I can avoid upgrade hassles in the future.
