I lol at at you xp guys. its a 7 year old technology. Most people replace their pcs every 2-3 years b/c of how fast technology advances. I believe is more of a pc literate issue than a OS issue.

Technology works for human beings not the other way around.
My WinXP Quadcore system does pretty good running my "Win only"applications.....other than that, my UBUNTU Laptop Kicks ASS....

Looks like it's a task that runs 1am on Sunday and one of the functions it does is it removes 'broken' shortcuts from the desktop. Not just put them in a folder, but removes them completely. I'll have to disable that task via group policy I guess.

It only happened on that one machine because it was the only one turned on at that time, the other 2 were off.

Why the heck would Microsoft think this is a good idea?

Windows 7 has 'tasks'?

In similar fashion to the cron on unix?

I am not saying Win7 is Bad at all....but what is it to learn? The less bloated OS the better IMO, and Microsoft learn that the hard way with Vista. I have not tried Win7 at all nor I am interested.....nothing new to learn IMO, other than new locations for PC settings....AGAIN...:banghead:

Same with Office 2007....everyone at work hates it.....Same application but it was redesigned (ribbons?), only a few improvements.....but you have to learn how everything works and where is located all over again with the new GUI....... and for what purpose? $$$ :dunno: $$$

The OS, as we know it, will be obsolete eventually....web based applications will be the rule of thumb.....

Something to watch for when it gets released is the new Chrome OS.....I believe Google will set the new standard for how an OS should be and work.....and Microsoft will follow.

P.S: I am not bashing Microsoft at all, if it wasn't for them I would personally not have a job.....so Thank you Bill Gates.

I look at a computer as the stinking machine that it is. If its not broken I don't want it fixed.

I see no problems with XP at all whatsoever....in my hundreds of very very diverse set ups. x64 and x86.

I have played with 7 and while it (obviously) destroys Vista it has shown me no good reason to implement in any of my set ups.

I have never cared for bells and whistles and I disable over 30 services in XP.....I think almost 50 in Vista.....and soon many in 7 I'm sure....I have not even looked at all of them yet.

The problem with XP is it won't be supported anymore after 2012.

But the world's going to end then anyways. Maybe because of XP going away. :scared:

I seriously can not justify to any of my clients the upgrade to a new OS if all they are going to be doing is Web browsing, email and Doc editing, that is 80% of my clientele, the other 20% are more sophisticated users like Graphic Designers, Web Developers, Accountants and PC gamers of course. Those users need to be on the edge as most likely the applications they use will evolve with the OS.
In other words You can not use that version of XXXXXX because it won't be compatible anymore..... so you are 100% right about the end of XP support. Users will be forced to "Upgrade" but they are PC whores anyways and they will love it.

So you see there are 2 groups of users the way I see it....wouldn't you agree?

That says it all right there. I don't need all the crap they are stuffing in the new ones, so why get them? XP works perfect for me. My computer rips and does everything I want it to. No need to change.

Thanks Madmat for disabling all the crap in my XP. :smokin:

Same with Office. I HATE all the crap they make it do 'automatically'. I have to go in and turn all the garbage off.

However, if the Chrome OS is anything like the browser, I want it.

im actually enjoying win 7 so far
not a glitch on my ancient sony viao that barely meets the minimum specs

it's rolling much faster than it was on xp
faster boot
seems to use the processor more efficiently

Was your XP install hosed? XP will run on a Pentium 2 533 with 64mb of memory. It can scream on old machines.

7 still technically requires a gig I think. And uses at least 512 just to idle... without any tweaking.

Stinking Vista sat idle at almost 860MB out of the box. Disturbing!

xp was ok
just with all my back ground programs my wife used and allt he service packs
ithink it was just getting jacked

even with fresh installs it was getting annoying

yeah definately used less ram
i had to upgrade the ram to 1 gb to get 7 on
but it really is running smoother for me
i don't get to use all the bells and whistles
but i don't need them

as a basic os i think it is just better than xp
my buddy that ran the beta loved it all along
i can see why

The problem with windows 7 is you can't run it in XP compatible mode unless you have a CPU that supports hardware virtualization.

Without the XP mode, your current software won't work. So you'll have to go out and buy all new software that will work on it.

It's a conspiracy I tell you!!!! :sneaky:

Wait till she runs all of that stuff in the background with 7.

There should not be one single thing running in the background. On any of these set ups. Even Apple. Maybe a antivirus if you are not behind a configured router I guess.

My main gamer has nothing except a clock and a speaker in the start menu. No anti virus....no anything. And then I allow Nvidia to run one application...NvCpl.

Strip MSConfig and strip 30 things out of services and XP screams. Service packs 2 or 3 did nothing to slow the OS down that I can think of.

I can get XP to scream and sit idle at roughly what Win 98 ran at!! What does 7 do that requires 500 more MB of Random Access Memory (let us not forget that this is randomly accessible and with todays broad band and malicious intent one could potentially see way to much information for no good reason) just to exist!?

What is Vista/7 doing that requires so much RAM? Even with your typical tech tweaks! I am working on it.

Your XP install was probably old and tired. After a few years of regular use they get that way. A fresh install (or system recovery) of the XP would make it run like it was new. The reason Win 7 runs fast is "freshness".

Imagine how your ski would run if you hadn't changed the spark plugs since XP was installed on your system.

Excellent Points!
A lot of folks do not realized that every application you install makes itself readily available to you at start up....eating resources.

Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!

I don't even run an antivirus app either!

There ya go, Benny. I've been running linux exclusively on my desktop since 2003. IMHO it is superior to MS offerings, aside from the commercial application base. Although, I am getting tired of messing with wine for running the occasional windows game. A few peeps at work run Turbo XP (illegit/illegal), that has all the bloat disabled outta the box.

Cromium (Chrome OS) OTOH, is a radically different approach. Absolutely *everything* is run within an instance of the web browser... as a tab, or whatever. If this somehow catches on, than it's likely to revolutionize how we use computers. I just can't get used to the idea, though.

I used to take every chance at bashing MS... but in the end ya gotta give Billy-Boy credit: he's a pure genius. He has repeatedly taken inferior products & pushed them to the top. Yes, they've been a little anti-competitive but that's typical of a big corporation. Vista was kind of a flop, but Win7 has it's promises. I'll let the test pilots do what they do, while I use my favorite OS. --Josh

I love linux, but none of my apps run on it or wine.

Seems every other version of windows has been a flop.
