My summer is pretty much ruined, or at least most of it. I went to Mexico last Wednesday morning. I made about 6 dives over the next couple days and it was incredible. The weather was perfect and the water visibility was unreal. We saw a couple sharks (including a 6 footer) and several rays, barracuda, sea turtles ect it was great. we went on an evening dive to a coral wall and went down to 100ft and came back up. We were all messing around and having a good time. The dive instructor and I were launching off the front of the wakes and coming back down on the deck as the boat came back down on the other side of the wave, but one time instead of coming back down the boat caught another little wave and was coming up as I was coming down. I landed and fell to the ground I tried to stand right back up but I couldn’t feel my leg. The first thing that went through my head was oh crap I’m paralyzed, then ok wait I can move/feel my left leg. I BROKE MY LEG I BROKE MY LEG!! My girlfriend who I was kind of leaning on says no you didn’t then looks and put her hand on it HE BROKE HIS LEG (the proceeds to start crying) her mom who is a semi nurse said it would be better to leave it until the paramedic could look. It was a 40 minute ocean boat ride back. The waves were not huge but it was still pure hell. We got back and they straightened it and put it in a splint. Then hauled me off to Mexican hospital. They took me into the x-ray room and man it was a nice machine (at least it was nice for the 1970s) they took my leg out of the splint and my knee was locked as I am screaming for one of them to hold my foot It proceeds to go from a this ll to this **==. So basically my bones in my femur we just twisting and grinding and cutting through my flesh. That was pretty much the most painful thing I have ever been through. My femur was shattered into 4 pieces. The surgeon came to tell me it needed a rod and it would be 4 days before they could order it and get it there. Then he left. That was a horrible night. They didn’t have very good drugs so when they finally gave me something I would sleep for about 10 minutes every hour. My girl friend stayed up all night trying figure out what to do. They decided the best option would be to just fly back home on an air ambulance (26 grand!!) we did learn that blue cross blue shield insurance thinks that the medical field ends on the weekends and has no one that can make any kind of decision until Monday morning (it was Friday night) so we made the call put it on credit card and the plane got there on sat about 8 something. They put me in a half cast that was much better than the splint and got me on the plane. Halfway through the flight they got me some morphine and it let m sleep. I got to the hospital in town about 3 something dr. Puttman did my surgery. Took about an hour. I now have a 15mmX400mm rod in my leg. I can barely pee by myself. THIS SUCKS!!!
Sorry if this is hard to read there are a lot of drugs pumping through me…
