Wow, somehow I missed this build... OMFG dude you have your work cut out for you!!! But looks like its going well, nice job. I like the Octane style hood. Best of luck on the rest of the build.

Now... Since it was a square... and you made the hood like an Octane... and its still not technically a roundie...

I think you should call it the "OCTAGON"

I know... :stupid:

I should be able to bring what I have done so far. I'll try to plan on that. I cut the fiberglass cloth for the hood last night so I should be glassing very soon. I also figured out how I'm going to get the nose to work without getting any interference when opening the hood.

Octagon....hmm.....I've already got a paint scheme figured out but that won't be seen until Lanier. I'll ask the ski what it thinks about the name and see if he likes it.

wow, cool! i missed this one too! this is an interesting one for sure!

I'll ask the ski what it thinks about the name and see if he likes it.

nozzle left and right for no and up and down for yes.....

make sure you dont forget to hook up your trim and steering before you ask.:sneaky:

Time for an update. I glassed the hood Saturday evening. It has two layers of 1708 knytex. I cut oversize pieces of cloth and wetted them out where necessary while on the hood. I spent almost two hours with an RO sander to get it to what is shown in the pictures. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. I still need to trim up a few areas and then deal with some high and low spots. The black was for me to see the "finished" product without the distracting color changes and also to help me sand. I'll be gone this weekend, but I should be able to start glassing the nose area on Tuesday if I don't get to it before then. This is slow work. Good thing I started so early or I wouldn't have a prayer of finishing by May. BTW, that last pic is a 218lb stress test that the hood passed with flying colors. :arms: The slime on the inside of the hood is the foam and spackling compound after being eaten with acetone. I'll clean everything up inside and probably add another layer of thinner cloth. The hood extensions will definitely get another layer plus a little extra reinforcement.

wOw, thats gonna look sweet assembled. I do not envy the amount of sanding your in for.

You have no idea how much misery I was in from the sanding I did two nights ago just before I painted. I had fiberglass all over me well into the next day, which was two showers later.

keep up the killer work bro cant wait to see the finished product....

Thanks for all the compliments guys.....it helps. FL Cracker: there is a reason for the hood dropping off sharply like it does, but that will just have to be disclosed at Lanier:cool2: It's really not so sharp if you look at it from the right angle, but it doesn't have the typical aftermarket big air scoops. If it all works out half as well as it does in my head, it'll be pretty cool.

Update: This stuff goes SLOW. I really thought I'd be to the next step by now. I cut the cloth last night and I'll be glassing the nose tonight. I'll still have to form up the pole mount area to make sure it's strong enough, but then I'll be able to mount the hood and pole and then work on some other stuff. I'm trying to start in the front and work my way to the back. Otherwise I'll do what I always do which is to start 50 projects and hardly finish any of them.

Holidays make things go slow! What you are doing is pretty cool and I can't wait to see the finished product at Lanier!

See you at Daytona! Maybe you can win some really cool toys for your build at the raffle!:purr: :purr:

It's been a long time since the last update. I decided to slow down on the updates because much of the work that I've been doing is labor intensive but light on results. I finally have enough to show.

The pole mount area is rock solid. There are 7 layers of 1708 knytex on the flat section and then 5-6 layers everywhere else. I have one small area of the nose to add a few layers to inside the hull, but for the most part I'm done and I can finally move on to other areas. :arms: The hood is also rock solid. I weighed it at 10lbs before I added the last two layers to the font lip and "ears" I imagine that it'll be around 14lbs with liner when I'm done.

I'm very happy with the results so far. I can't believe how long it took to get to this point. I could have taken my worst estimate of time and tripled it and still not be where I'm at now. The rest of the hull should go much, much faster since there isn't nearly as much freehand forming.

If you look at the side view pic of the hull, I've trimmed about 3/8" -1/2" off of the rails. I did this because I'll be using epoxy with filler to make a roundnose style rail all the way around.

The project finally has a name. This is now known as project Square-go-Round. Cheesy huh?
