Lanier 07 Buildoff Contender

Front lip is now done. I used 3 layers of 1708 Knytex. As you can see, the cloth didn't want to lay down so I ended up using staples placed by hand (not the staple gun) to try to get it to lay down. Overall it did pretty well and there are only a few places where the lip isn't flat. I should be able to sand that down just fine. The lip is very strong. I can flex it some, but after I add the top deck portion of the nose and then reinforce from the inside after they are together, I should have no strength issues.

My plans keep changing every time I go out in the garage. I am going to get the nose done first before I do any more work on the tray area, but to finish the nose I have to cut the hood down since the lines will have to match. I still plan on building up and shaping eps foam in order to make a cheapo mold. It's moving a little slower than I would like it to, but for now there's plenty of time to finish.

What is the styrofoam you are using on the nose come in 1/4" sheets and are you gluing together as you lay it on top of each other

We get the styrofoam by about 1000 sheets at a time for packing cast stone onto pallets. It's 1 lb density and I believe it's about 1/2". I used some hot glue but quickly found out that you can only use it right after the gun is warm enough to melt the glue. Any hotter and you'll melt foam. I didn't have to use much glue since the foam almost held itself in place. I did use a few drywall screws to temporarily hold the foam. Just a reminder: You CAN NOT use typical epoxy resin with foam. The brand we buy at work is the only brand I know of that will not eat the foam.

That ski is coming out great bro! Nice work, keep it up......I am well into my build as well....I am trying some things that have never been done.....way to think outside the box, or square lol

Thanks. If all of the ideas that are in my head can materialize, this will be one bad SOB. There are going to be quite a few things that I've never seen before.

You ever going to post some pics?

for sure man, its just hard not having a Camera....I have already takin some pics, but my friend has not had time to help me load them.:banghead: I will hav my own build thread.....maybe we can exchange some secrets.:haha:

So far I have cut out the tray, removed all foam, and gutted the entire boat. Today I will be prepping the entire boat for a little Kevlar reinforcement. My Boat Is at Bobby's shop....Trinity Composites.....I am doing all the work except for laying the Kevlar.....I will leave that to the Pro!

wait, are you using a RN top deck or modifing a square, I know, maybe I should go back and read...........

Flame away!!!!!!!!!!

Neither. Making my own. I'm going to shape foam and then make a mold of that. I'm only doing it once so the mold won't be pretty. I think it is going to be a roundnose/octane/sxr/sxi frankenbeast. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the hood. I'm leaning towards making it like an octane hood but I need to find more pics.

I would lean towards a Superjet RN Hood, more choices.............

I'm not buying one, I'm modifying mine. My money is going to be spent on XMW stuff and the motor and paint. My time is going to be spent on the custom glass work. I think I like the way the octane hood eliminates the need for a separate nose piece. I just have to figure out the mechanics of it all for this situation. From the bulkhead back is going to have at least as much customization as the front half, if not more.

cant wait to see that!:sneaky:

Good to see all of you guys too. It's 10:45 and I'm finally done working for the day. I lied. It only ended up being 17 hours because I cut some corners. Maybe I'll get some garage time tomorrow.

First off, I need to say thank you to Chick for donating a roundnose hood to the project. Second, I have to tell you that it won't work. Unfortunately, the rear half of the round and square hoods are very different and I don't see how I could make it work and still seal correctly. Thanks Chick. It's here when you need it or I can sell it and send you the money.

I haven't gotten very much done lately for various reasons. As you can see, I opened up the vents in the hood a little bit. It should be able to breath well.(sarcasm) I removed the hood liner and I have begun to hack it up in order to add styrofoam and glass it into it's new shape. The red piece of cardboard is a very rough representation of what I think I'll end up with. Take a look at an Octane and you'll see what I'm going for. It will eliminate the separate nose piece and hopefully allow me to narrow up the wide gap that squarenoses have in front of the hood. I'm still not happy with how the back of the hood looks, but it is a good start. I should have some foam shaped up next time I post pics.

Well, crap---I thought with all the other glass work going into this thing you would be able to figure something out. :banghead:

Sell the hood and buy a round of drinks at Daytona with the proceeds. :Banane01:
