The purpose of this thread is to give you guys a glimpse of my entry for the 2007 buildoff and also to get you other competitors off your lazy arses and in the shop. As you can see from the pics, I have a LONG way to go. The starting point is an old squarenose hull that I received from SJ/XP Bri (Big thanks). Paul brought it to me at Lanier 06 and I've sat on it until now. I was going to turn this into a surf boat and start the buildoff with a much cleaner hull, but my wife is riding the other hull now and she likes it the way it is. I'll keep the thread updated with bits and pieces as I go, but you won't get a complete look at the build until after the buildoff. The hull is going to get some very extensive fiberglass work, starting with repairing the super vag that I had to grind out of the bottom of the hull to fix a big crack. I haven't chosen a powerplant yet, but I'll probably do something that keeps it competition legal in case I want to compete in amateur freestyle in the future. These first 4 pics show what it looks like after 2 evenings of stripping hardware and grinding ribs.

Here's an update from before I started working on it last night. The square nose is gone and now I have a ton of work to do. I plan on sculpting the bottom lip area out of eps foam and glassing over that. Next, I'll shape and sculpt a new top deck nose out of eps and pull a mold off of that and then make the glass piece. I cut around the pole mount area. It is getting cut almost all the way through underneath the back edge so that I can make it flat like a round nose. I didn't get to do much last night except I cut out the typical window in the bottom of the tray and started defoaming. I'm going to wait until my footholds come in (should be monday) and then I'll cut the forward side cutouts to defoam the rest. As long as I don't take too many breaks I might actually finish before May.

Cool :biggthumpup: I wish I got this early of a start on my project.........I might have just made the build off in time instead of wrenching at Lanier :haha: Cant wait to hear more info on the build :woot:

I'm not at liberty to say :sneaky: On the up side it is a completly different boat than it was at Lanier :biggthumpup: Bigger, badder and more scratches :haha:

I was thinking that while you have the nose apart, it may be really easy to reinforce that pole area. It's always such a pain to reinforce upside down with little light in there. Obviously you'll still have to tie it in to your new nose piece, but it may be something to look into. Just a thought :)

It's been awhile since I posted so I figured I should show a little progress. I've started to defoam the tray area. I'm still waiting on footholds before I go any further. When I get the footholds I'll position them and then sculpt the sides of the tray and glass over the sculpted sides before defoaming completely and glassing in footholds, exhaust, sucppers, etc. The pics you see show where I have begun to shape eps foam in preparation for glassing in a new front lip. It might look a little off center, but that's because my cut was not even on both sides. I assure you that everything will be even before I start glassing. You can also see where I had to widen the hole in the hull. That will start getting glass soon. You can also clearly see where I hacked up the pole mount area and bent it down flat. I achieved this by using a dremel with a grinding stone to grind out the backside where the bend is. I was surprised at how much "meat" I was able to leave and yet still bend it down easily. The grinding action heated up the material rather well and then I helped it out with my heat gun. It's not perfectly flat but I'll fix that soon enough. Next, I plan on finishing the foam work up front and glassing in a front lip. After that I can build up eps foam into what the new nose will look like. That will get sanded and coated with spackling compound and then I'll make a cheapo mold of that. I don't plan on doing this more than once so a good mold is not a priority.

PLEASE NOTE: I am using eps foam (styrofoam) to do all of my shaping and I'll end up putting epoxy resin over that. You CAN NOT do this with your typical epoxy resin ie West Systems or US Composites. There is only one company that I know of that makes a solvent free marine epoxy resin and that's what I'll be using because as luck would have it, that's what I buy for our mold shop at work.

Looks like I got lucky on the round nose part. I just put the overhead picture into SolidWorks and drew a radius over it. Looks like it's almost dead on with no more than 1/16" out in any spot. It even appears to be centered. My glass cloth just showed up so now I just have to wait on a resupply of resin before I can begin the fun stuff.
