Its been 2 years now since my first trip out there, I have learned to pace myself throughout the whole day. The last few rides, I'm often one of the last guy's still out there ripping, when the others have taken to the beer. Suva is by far the most impressive I have seen, party's like a rockstar, then rides all day nonstop. Probably has something to do with being in his low 20's.

Before you ride waves with me it is mandatory that you need to be able to at least do a tail stand. The tail stand is a fundamental understanding of control and balance. Every time you land off a wave you will(to some extent) need to tail stand for a second to get going again.
From there.....Start with small waves and work your way up.

When I learned to ride in January, within two hours of riding, I was out jumping in the surf. It's not that hard unless it's either really choppy, or the waves are huge. Just go for it.

Helmet should be mandatory, I have had my ski over my head way too many times, and hit the pole and left marks.

I started riding stand ups just this past July and surf riding since August. Its greats totally a blast. Really wouldn't about the helmet unless you are in big waves. I live in MI and turbo 626 and I go ride Lake Michigan. Best waves so far back in October 6 to 8 footers. Just make sure that your bilge is in good working order and hood straps wouldn't be a bad idea.

Just make sure you start with a small day and work your way up in wave size. I just started riding jetski's this summer and was out in the ocean on my 3rd session. It helps that I'm a fairly accomplished surfer, windsurfer and kitesurfer but the ski kicked my butt the first time in the surf. Just start with small waves and you'll have no problems.

Everyone keeps on talking about hood straps.

Shouldn't the hood strap that come stock work?

there is huge forces goin on in a wave, your ski can get rolled and rip that hood right off. you can also land on the side of the ski and the hood can pop off easy.
precautionary measure that every surfrider should be using.

I'm in southern NM.

Your info says you reside in taos. That's in NM kinda by me.

Ha ha ha, thats kinda a joke on my part... I live in Colorado, only 2.5 hrs from Taos. I'm trying to "live" in Taos on the weekends... planning on doing a lot of skiing this winter...

Taos rocks. I can't believe they are gonna start letting snowboarders.... bs. :dunno:

No doubt... grrrrr. There was something special about Taos that will be gone when the boards hit the slopes... I know I'll get flamed for that, but you just dont understand it unless you have been there. (ive been skiing there for 25+ years) :frown:  :17:

must have been a small day, or you have had some sort of cross training that helped....

this is some of the WORST advice that I have ever seen on this board NEWB...and helmets are MANDATORY for the daytona ride

bingo...

Everyone keeps on talking about hood straps.

Shouldn't the hood strap that come stock work?

the only thing that comes with a stock strap is an old school kawi..and thats not even a strap persay, thats your hoodlatch..

the straps are a SECONDARY method of hood retention

What is REALLY funny is to watch peeps try and get thru the shorepound when they have never ridden the ocean before..thats where the true entertainment lies

Yes, buy hood straps.
I came up short on a back flip this fall and I shattered my latch and broke one of my two straps. Without that remaining stap I would have been sunk.
