Super Jet Has anyone experienced this - cracked bendix bushing

I am replacing my starter and bendix due to other issues, when removing the old bendix, i've found the brass bushing was cracked and a little piece missing.

With the amount gone, it doesn't look like its going to be a big deal, just throw in a new bendix and hopefully be trouble free. I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask if anyone has seen or experienced this before and what the outcome was.

The bushing is about 6 bucks but I doubt many places have it available on hand making it a pain. Times not on my side, I leave my ski in So Cal and am only down here part time. I'd like to get the ski back together before I leave Monday.

Maybe its me but in you pictures it looks like the bendix is in backwards. Also there should be a washer on the bendix that goes against the case side. I have actually broken the washer before which has caused some pains but havnt broke the bushing yet.

In the first picture is looks like the case side to me and the starter hole looks like its right above there. But i could be wrong it hard with that picture to be 100%.

Looks like it was put in backwards. That looks like the case to me. Yiekees!

Kurt your picture clearly shows the chiped bushing is on the case side, so it does appear as if the Bendix was installed backwards because the chip on the Bendix shaft is on the flywheel cover side. This doesn't make sense though because I doubt it would even fit that way and it certainly wouldn't start the ski. Call me.

My guess is he was checking the condition of the bendix bushings with the nose of the bendix and that is why the chip is on the nose even it came from the rear/ case bushing.

That makes more sense. The old nose probing of the case side trick!

To be clear, the bendix was NOT in backwards. I just put the chipped piece on that end without thinking so the size of the chip can be seen.

Yes, I have two washers, One on each size (case side and flywheel cover side)

To be clear...Flywheel cover should have a washer on each side of the spring....and one washer case side.Total of three washers is original design .

I noticed you are putting in a new starter and presumably a new O-ring. I’ve started slightly reliving the sharp edge on the outside case hole that the starter inserts into to eliminate the potential for damage to the plump new O-ring. I had a set of cases once that constantly nipped the O-ring as it went in. I now always lightly radius that edge on all my cases to prevent this. Sorry about your predicament, I know what it’s like to leave a long distance ski not ready to ride. Most likely the next time you get west there will be an epic swell and you won’t be ready to ride. Ultimate bummer. You need some elves. Getting a new bushing doesn’t seem likely on Friday, but good luck!

Good to know, I don't have that third one, spring sits directly against the flywheel cover. Order starting at cover is Spring, small washer, bendix, small washer, case.

Ed, thanks for being positive. After numerious phone calls.... I found a place 40 minutes away that has there hands on 6 of them. Looks like I will be going for a little day trip.

A tap looks like a good way to get it out. Unfortunately, I don't have one and yet another thing ill need to go buy.

Correct Order starting at cover should be: Small washer, spring, small washer, bendix, big washer, case.
