Thats something I asked about on pwctoday a couple years ago. Came up with nothing. I just went to the auto paint supply and got a color real close.

Yeah a buddy of mine knows this car painter who mixes colors and made some touchup paint for his 02 and I've used it on mine and it looks awesome. Those yamaha hoods are a biotch.:banghead:

The hood is different than the hull, so be careful. Take it in to an auto paint store. They will have the best match.

Ski4 had a bunch of problems trying to find the right paint. He bought a "supposed" exact match that wasn't even close and had to go to the auto paint store and get it changed anyway.

It's because the hood is painted and the hull is gelcoat. I'd like a gelcoated hood like Rixster. That was a pretty good idea.

Go to www.rivayamaha.com. Click on the original parts finder. You can get the paint code for any boat, any year. It gives the paint code for the top deck and bottom deck, and hood. You probably want to get the code of the top deck not the hood cuz they are usually different. On my 02 the hood has more purple in it than the topdeck. I was going to try this but I've heard its very hard to match the color. Might be worth a shot. I have a feeling people buy the paint for the hood instead of the one for the deck and that is why it doesn't match.

even so it should have been a better match, i had to take it to the auto paint store and they gave me like 8 cans of tints, blues and purples to go home and experiment with till i got it close enough to tolerate

try that color rite site, way expensive but hopefully a better match than i was given by a highly respected company in these parts
good luck man

The problem is that even some of the factory paint does not match if it came out of a different batch.I am not suggesting that colorite will be a dead on color match it may or may not be.When I get the ppg dealer to come by here and scan a color with Their prophet scanning tool and mix it up it usually does not match, they have had to hand tint a lot of the paint to get it to match close enough for me.I found out on the ppg system that what it does is Find a paint code already in their system that is a close match and then the prophet tells it where to tint from there. On a base coat clear coat system it would probably be OK but on a single stage system it has to be dead on or it will show up.

For the record, the hood is painted...top-hull is gelcoat...lower-hull is painted (smc).

Getting paint to match gelcoat is near impossible because of how gelcoat and paint fade over time differently. Even if you can match gelcoat to paint while mixing, once hardner is added, it will again alter the shade.

A good example of this is black and white...you would think that both are easy to match (gelcoat to paint) but reality is its not so easy and there are many shades of black.

The best suggestion I have is to drop off your hood at an automotive (trade only) paint supply store and have them color match it. Your minimum order should be 1 quart. Most better paint supply shops will have computerized paint scanners.
