It's not that the crank threads are bigger, it's the smaller threads on the older SN mid-shaft.
You are trying to thread the coupler off a mid-shaft onto the crank.
The later mid-shafts and cranks had the same thread diameters so look for a coupler from one of those. You only need one side...
If water is coming into the bilge through the tube than most likely it isn't getting into the foam.
That PVC pipe that runs from the outside to the bilge has no connection or joints that could leak.
