Fisher cut the ears off a Watercross grate and copied it. The vanes are 1/2" below contour so it works fairly well. Not as good as a Worx201 but better than many older scoop grates that were flush with the bottom. A bargain for $50.
I made plans for full length slots in 1993. Surely some riders were using straps and wedges at the time. The IJSBA did not want to see much customization back then since they were owned by the MFGs. Footholds as they are came around with the barrel roll craze. They generally were not needed...
I have no experience with the stock large hub SJ impeller. It would likely be very good with minor adjustments. I will be testing a 12-18 large hub Solas this summer.
The stock vent line and separator was never designed for subs. Most riders vent the tank inside the engine compartment which solves most water intrusion problems. You will need to get in the habit of removing the hood before every ride so the ski doesnt explode when you hit the start button.
Out of the box Concord 13/17 is too much load. Let IMPROS do their 13-16 mod or just bend the trailing edge yourself. It will make a world of difference.
Do a compression test. It should be worth as much as it cost to cut a stock head, if its in good condition. Not too many 650 enthusiasts around so dont expect much.
Often the rear cylinder is a little hotter on the 701/760 engines. You may find that the rear plug will be lighter colored than the front when both carbs are set the same. Opening the top screw will do the same as changing the main jet.
Performance wise, the pipe will hit a little harder with 44s. They will need a much richer part throttle and/or full throttle mixture to get best response. This means it will need to sputter a lot around 1/4 throttle and/or be well rich of peak full throttle rpm. For cruising or long full...
TCW3 and most racing synthetic or castor will leave an oily exhaust on a watercraft. This may be messy but is good for corrosion protection. Standups seldom get hot enough to burn up much oil since they are at part throttle a lot. Cheap API-TC or JASO spec oil will leave more dry soot in the...
Try it before you learn to use standard steering and see if it works better. I cant imagine too many people will try it for more than a minute if they have learned to ride with standard steering..
Lower compression will allow you to run hotter mixtures and/or earlier timing for a given octane. Higher compression needs cooler mixtures and/or later timing. Its a balancing act.
Oversized carbs and rich part throttle mixtures make the response like a switch. Ive noticed that most riders do it anyway though, even with a stock ski.
I have used clear Imron to seal polished aluminum. Gasoline will turn it slightly over time. There is no other way to preserve the bling, anything else will hide it.
