Other Why are jetski engines so expensive?

It's all supply and demand... the metal to make the cases of a chevy V8 costs the same as the metal to make the cases of a Yamaha 701. It has nothing to do with paying a premium for the performance vs the size of the motor... it's a simpler motor, with fewer moving parts, and less in terms of hard cost of materials to make.

It's all supply and demand...

I am surprised no one has said it yet, but how about volume? GM has produced literally millions of LS series engines just since their introduction in 99. That is merely one family of engines made by one manufacturer. How many xs865's are out there?? I would be shocked if it was over 1000.

Probably much closer to several hundred than a thousand...

Pretty sure JM was commenting on the number of billet Team Scream packages, not LS1 engines.
And I'd say it's probably a safe bet that "several hundred" is still way too many.

classic.

though I agree this is not a cheap sport/hobby. Then again people who do spend the 3100 or so are looking for the absolute max performance from their ski. Most of us get along fine with a Bpipe and a head. Still paying almost twice for an OEM crank what cases cost, not so much. Then there is another option...get the crank rebuilt. Much less expensive. Or befriend someone who has an EXCESS of yamaha parts....not everything used is crap. SBT on the other hand yea they are.

People who race motorcycles either on or off road know these costs. Tires, fuel, entries, etc, etc.... I did it myself for a while 350 for a set of slicks from my tire guy, and they lasted a weekend. 350 x 12 weekends= EXPENSIVE!!!

I guess my point is simply this. Going fast is expensive, but not everyone has to go Mach 5 with their hair on fire.

I don't wanna even get into the 4stroke skis.....you think two strokes are expensive....hahahahah wait till the number of what you need doubles...EVIL for go fast parts

Anyone got any ideas on jamming a 900cc twin 4stroke into a superjet or blaster hull, can you say torque..

K I'm done rant over....

You're right...I'm an idiot. lol

I felt sooo stupid for my post that I had to delete it.

And how much of that $1k oem crank is profit? I'd bet a lot. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with profit. I just wonder how many more cranks or motors would be sold if they were affordable to more people. I would buy a couple 865s if they were I nthe $2,000 range.

Its all supply and demand, little competition in the market vs volume. If people are willing to pay the premium price, they will set the market.Oem parts help make costs high as well but there are tons of good used cases out there and oem cranks can be rebuilt far less expensive. My theory is take the premium price off and make it up in volume,so more everyday standup riders in the states can afford quality power.also get the margins back with volume to be worth the investment. This concept will be tested soon,a sub 2k pv motor will be out this yr.......

Before I bought mine, I called all the dealers in the area and all told me that nowadays a very few people are interested in stand ups, most of their customers are looking for something recreational rather and high liability single rider ski. We were discussing this with friends, not for custom/aftermarket engines, but for the stock ski I bought also.. A simple design ski with most simple 2 stroke motor in it for $8k? i think this is over priced for something that has no intellectual or super tech value, however it's worth the money for the fun you get :)

the price of a new stand up is dumb. I think companies killed the stand up market themselves.

Same will happen to snow machines. your 12k for the new bad ass sled. and they change tons every year. Fewer and fewer people buy new sleds.

super jets, few and expensive and awesome

JS kawi, TONS of them and they are free to $1000 for a mint clean one. but slow but still can be fun.

the technology race pretty much killed skis in general, mid 90s skis for 5k,now they are 15k. Computers are a good example of what it takes to stay market minded.they keep getting faster and better, but they figure out how to make them more efficiently and cheaper.they are still the same price as they were in the mid 90s,instead of 3x more.they continue to sell even though everyone has one
