Turfing = harder than I thought!

Dang... i have a new appreciation for everyone on here that can pump out a really nice turf job...

I started trying to turf my ski last night... I tried making no cuts at all on the entire piece on the side including making no cuts in the area that went in the foothold... that got all F'd up, so I had to rip the entire piece off and start over....

Started over with new confidence and better planning... this time I made a cut inside the foothold and after it was all placed it ended up being shaped like a triangle... everything else layed up good this time and I filled the triangle shape back in with a little piece of turf. I still made about 2 little errors with the turf bunching up in the hold an had to cut little flaps out to get the turf to lay down flat... used some superglue in these places....

Next I cut all the way from the back to the front along the outside edge... I need to learn to be better with a razor blade.... I sucked at this! I scratched my ski 2 times and cut the turf to far in 2 times as well!!!!! I filled in the little spots with more turf and superglue and will touch up the scratches with a little auto paint touch up... but DANG... I have a new appreciation for doing a super nice turf job!

It did turn out fairly good as I tried to make the repairs as good as possible... I can prob get a free pass if any of you guys see it as it was my first time :). I will post pics up in my build thread when I'm all done.... if everything goes right I will finish tomorrow night. Later guys.

turf

I noticed that if you cut the upper edges or overlapping edges at an angle you can then much better fold them together almost with no seem and also on the upper edge push them in...but I just returfed 2 skis and I am new to turfing and it is not as easy as I thought.

Patience......funny I have that rebuilding engines, but when it comes to paint, resin, glue, hydroturf i suck......

This is making me more likely to buy footholds that have pre-cut turf kits.

I had almost covinced myself to get some REV's.

Blowsion Diggers are looking better and better.

Using 1 piece of turf for the bottom tray, and 1 for the sides is easy. Just cut it slightly oversized, then measure and trim, remeasure, fit and trim, etc...

for the sides, I left a large area of excess that would fold into the holds. I dry fit it a number of times, so many that it started holding the shape... once its all stuck down, you can trim it, and press the edges in.

Pre cut is NO easier. B grade sheets only for me.

And I feel turfing is 2nd hardest part of working on a ski just behind refoaming. Which I have never even done but it looks like SOOOO nasty of a job!!

after doing several turf jobs, at least 5 on just my ski alone plus many others, it is just a thing......... takes a few times to figure out the tricks.....

here is my best advice, especially for your first time. don't expect perfection. that way you won't get to frustrated. It's just turf, if it functions you did a good job.

Good advice Wavedemon. I hate turfing too. Thats funny you mentioning ripping it off. My first side piece I did got jacked/stuck on and I ripped it off. Fortunately I made patterns for all the pieces.
Yes the heat gun, welding glove, and preforming/shaping is your friend for the front bumper and rear corners. Taking your time and not getting frustrated is make makes a nice turf job. Be patient!
