SXR in the surf

The swell on the SE coast of Australia has been insane for last last 4-6 weeks, perfect weather conditions have been popping up on a weekly basis for some huge clean swell.

Some of the days were easily double over head in size, a few weeks ago the annual Surfest was on, its an international surfing comp held in newcastle (my home town :woot: ) and they had jetski assistance to get out the back. Also heaps of tow ins happening around newcastle over this time, awesome to watch.

Unfortunately no one wants to sit out to take pics when its on like this, so this is all we've got. It was one of the more messy days, so one of my mates sat it out

Another stab, first 2 pics

3rd pic is good for size reference, I'm a few metres in front of the wave (facing to the right) way over my head, atleast 2-2.5 times my height.

Last one is my mate Luke rushing in to get rid of his ski so he can help me swim mine in  I had popped my hood on a roll and not realised (at least the straps work) lost the ski doing a re-entry and she filled up in no time thanks to the hood not being sealed. Theres not much of an SXR above water when they're sunk, very hard work getting it in.

After all that bigger swell I've finally got a few rolls to my name, not the best landings yet but I'm riding away from a few, and we both had some pretty solid backflip attempts last weekend (its so hard trying to convince your brain to hold on  ) so I think they'll be down in the next couple of weeks.

Definately have to chase someone to hold a camera for us.

Shoey,
I had the same probs with my hood. If you use rachet straps, it will NEVER EVER EVER come off again. I even have stock hood hooks and latch that are broken, and my hood will never come off.
Cool pics...Keep em comin!

Those are awesome! Keep the picts coming  I'm adding some of your pictures to my screen saver at work, gotta keep myself properly motivated. LOL You are giving me more motivation for getting my SXR in the surf!!! I can not wait!

Thanks everyone, its good to get some SXR coverage occasionally :headbang: . I've got a mate with a Nikon D50 digSLR, so I'll have to get him on the breakwall next time the swells up, check out the quality of his pics. Also I'm going to buy a waterproof digi ( maybe this one? ), or a digi and a housing.

djkorn,
My straps are looking a bit worn out, I might try rachet straps next time. These ones work pretty good, I've never lost my hood. I'll just have to check that its sitting on properly more often.

D Slicker,
Most of those are coal ships, normally 30-40 on the horizon at all times, Newcastle is the biggest coal port in the world (77.7 million tonnes exported last year) they put out a pretty good wake too :Banane01:

Proformance1,
I've been following your thread, it'll be good to see another SXR getting trashed in the surf  . The SXR is definately a very capable surf boat, all the SJ talk can be a bit off-putting at times, but stick with it, all you need is big swell and big, well :cool2: .

LBE,
Where abouts in Aus are you going?? Its a HUGE place, if you're around here then we'll get you out in the surf for sure. :woot:
