i overtightened my head pipe to the manifold and the aluminum manifold stripped. The bolt looks fine still.

I never really looked to close at the timecerts I had put in my manifold but if they do have a flange any shop can counterbore the hole.
I know it's not the best idea, but I was in a pinch and heli-coiled a manifold to a standard bolt size, fine thread of some flavor, and just bought stainless bolts at a local hardware store. I was back on the water fast.
I would have heli-coiled them back to the original threads, but I would have had to special order that particular size, and the standard was in stock, and a lot cheaper.

Helicoils work just fine compared to timeserts and are usually much more readily available. I put 3 helicoils in my FP manifold on my 750 while it was still attached to the engine and have never looked back. I just put some tape over the hole so none of the shavings could get to the engine. Just make sure you use the right drill bit and you're good to go by the end of the day.

beauty of an insert is if it ever pulls you still can chop it all out, weld and redrill, retap.

Just tap it to 7/16 - 20 and you can buy s/s sockethead capscrew's easily.That's what I did to hell with those impossible to find fpp bolt's, They couldn't of used a worse pitch if they tried lol
Just did my manifold with Timeserts. Part of the installation process is counterboring the holes (comes with bit). It is simple to do and seems super strong. Only way to go IMO.
Also, they sell big-serts to be used for other attempted insert repair that did not hold.

my new manifold stripped the 1st time i installed the pipe. I didn't overtorque it either. I used helicoils as they were readily available locally, no issues so far. The took < 10 mins to install, and feel a lot strongner than the stock threads.
Both inserts will work very well and both will work better than stock aluminum threads. Timeserts are better when put through the same extreme conditions. However, timeserts require more effort to install than helicoils. More effort can lead to more room for error and an error in hole prep can quickly defeat the purpose of stepping up to the better inserts and actually lead to a weaker insert.

Not disagreeing with jfw but what is so hard about drilling a hole, counterboring it, tapping it, and installing the insert?????? Hardest part is trying to keep it square, and there are tools for that too.

I will try again tomorrow to find bolts since the waves are lookin decent for a pm ride.
Thanks for the advise. My immediate thought was to use washers and a smaller nut and bolt set-up. :beerchug:
