you want this??? I don't.

I think we have it good just where we are at...
Gonna have to agree with Nick on this one, we need to hold the ground we have now, perhaps grow some of the events, but no real reason to think the sport as a whole needs to get huge.

The economic factor holding the sport back is HUGH.

Ok, who is this Hugh guy and where can we find him (I have some shady friends here in ATL that will handle this problem for us, if only I had known sooner that it was all one guy...)

In all seriousness, there is a huge difference between the surfing pop and the motosurf/watercraft pop... a quote below;

By 1963, there were two million surfers, most of them in California. Today, the worldwide surfing population is estimated to be between 17 and 23 million.
Granted that the online group of riders, enthusiasts, and hangers on is not the end all be all, we have nothing close to those numbers, and much like Mr. 227 said, we are continually fighting bans on where people can ride while surfing can still expand.

As far as what you see on TV, just because it is broadcast does not mean that its there because people think its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Alot of the TV programming you see is done through what is called a time buy, where basically an entity (MLB is one such entity) buys their own airtime to broadcast their content. Alot of channels, networks, etc would air ski content if someone wants to pony up the change to pay for the space... a half hour midnight time slot on a janky little network will run you about 100k for a 12 episode season, a daunting figure that could be very hard to recoup.

And magazines... well. Periodical print media is having a hard time right now. Everyone should ask themselves this question, "Have I not renewed magazine subscriptions in the past because I knew I could find the information I was looking for faster on the internet?"

In terms of delivering timely, relevant content it has been a hard road to hoe when competing with the interwebz for the print media industry. This is why you see publications like the Wall Street Journal trying to "up" their online presence now, eventually the actual printing part of it will go away and we will get subscriptions shot directly to our Ipads, phones, whatevers... but the transition will be tough for smaller publishers who can't afford to keep up (Cycle News anyone?)

To be perfectly honest in the case of Justin and his mag, alot of people whom you may have contacted for advertising, etc probably want to see if you guys will be around in a year as your mag is still a baby in terms of how long it has been around (and that is not meant to disparage anyone's efforts or the mag itself), especially when things are doing as poorly as they are right now economically. Keep plugging away at it, keep hitting up your contacts and show them you guys are doing good things, and maybe after a year or two a few will jump on board, then a few more and so on...

Well, now that I have completely skewed this conversation I'm off to find HUGH Grant and off him for the future progression of the watercraft industry...

I have to agree with slut on this one. Most of you who don’t come from a surfing background don’t realize how good we have it. Even though were a small group, there’s enough of us out there to make it worth while for the MFG’s to keep making skis, that’s not the problem now. THE PROBLEM NOW is the crazy ENVIRONMENTALISTS and EPA RESTRICTIONS. Every body wants a clean environment, but they are simply taking this clean emissions crap to far. There really needs to be a line drawn as how far the EPA can go, (WHICH CAN NOT BE CHANGED IN THE FUTURE, or, at least until technology for a practical alternative engine exists) And MFG’s need to step up and make two strokes with clean fuel injection to meet a reasonable standard set by the EPA. I’m hearing rumors of existing two stroke outboard engines with fuel injection which have better emissions than 4 strokes. We really need to have a Two Stroke Representative Association (Say like the National Rifle Assoc who represents gun owners and fights gun control) to Lobby for our sport in Washington with the EPA. We alone are too small of a group but if all Watercraft enthusiasts, Dirt/Quad and other Off Roaders, Fishermen and even Landscapers with two stroke weed wackers could all unit we would have a sizable lobbying force to represent us in Washington and to the EPA.

AWA is our lobby... John Donaldson and Chris Manthos do a great job but we need people to join the AWA and keep the voice alive..

ok yeah those numbers are hard to argue with. that is basically what I was looking for, a reason why we were not represented. we are just too small. I just had it in my head that somehow it would be a small thing for a large company to get our groups money thru a mag.

thanks Chris, and a bloody headshot of Hugh will do for proof. I can start a "hit" pool. I got a dollar...who else?

Justin- not to put you on the spot but are you hitting up big companies or just us little guys? cause you asking me for money is the same as me asking you lol. we both are eating off the dollar menu or skipping lunch altogether.

Would it be a stretch to try to get Versus or Speed Channel to have some coverage of Finals or even just a one-hour recap of the season, kind of like a highlight show? I know the networks are starving for some good content especially if ESPN runs the spelling bee and other non-sport events. I sat down to shoot a few emails out to Versus and Speed asking if they would consider some coverage, but I couldn't find an email address to their programming director and I had to get back to work.

And Chris is absolutely right about buying the airtime. I believe Art Sellinger did the same thing with the Long Drive World Championships. At least this is what I was told. They ran on Christmas day last year and a few other times since then.

I was watching old X-games the other day and couldn't figure out how ESPN hasn't thought of adding any Jetski'ing to the mix. I mean I can only watch dirtbikes backflip so many times.

I am dealing with Versus right now on some other content I am working on (hopefully first episode airs oct. 12th lol)... they are not as starving as you may think, the line up is progressively moving more in the direction of motorsports (the show I'm working on is supposedly spearheading this new programming along with a few others)...

X Games is a crazy entity unto itself, half the time i wonder if the people involved even know what the hell is going on with the stuff they do cover... having been involved with that whole process now has opened my eyes to how ALOT of decisions get made regarding their content... honestly alot of it has to do with venue. To see how the XG staff rampages through La for a few days building up and tearing down venues is amazing and its such a machine now that if they cannot get in and out of a venue easily they just pass...

there was a time when you could ride in Daytona about the time the surf expo was going on and then some bonehead invited all his "friends" and now every year you can barely see the water with all the skis flyin everywhere. Nick do you know who that guy is? Tell Chris so we can get a 2-fer deal lol. :silly:

Unless his name is Hugh yer outta luck lol... I have to have a niche if I am going to be offing people!

I'm pretty happy with the size of Freestyle and Freeride right now. It has grown dramatically over the past 8 years. I am not too worried about racing....I just want a couple guys to go ride with and I'm happy and this website makes it possible to find someone to ride with on just about any body of water around...

The Freerides are growing and becoming better every year! Daytona, Virginia and The Xtreme Team Lake Erie ride are leading the way...

Alot of the smaller rides are still a great time too in a different way! Can't wait until my little guy gets older so I can start taking him to a bunch of rides and hit up some that I haven't made it to yet.

Surfing is HUGE!!!! It isn't even fun to surf, because you can't catch a wave....even in Cleveland we'll have 30 surfers out when we get waves. (HERE they know to stay off our section of the beach!)

OR the people at kawasaki and yamaha could just make a four stroke ski lol. the stand up sport IS definetly coming back, i see more people out on the lake with standups now, and my freinds hang with me out on my ski, then theyre hooked. im hoked in it FOR LIFE> there is no getting out of this sport, i love it too much. kawasakis 800 sxr is already out of production because they dont want to deal with EPA bullsheet anymore, and yamaha is going to stop eventually too. after that, guys like me, tom21, JRE, watcon, are gonna keep making parts, and making skis and stuff and maybe start a corp. from it. ik this sport will not die F*** the EPA, IDC if i wasnt allowed to ride the stand ups anymore, id still too it and id pay the ticket everytime!
