Say a prayer for my cousin

So i got a call today from my pops about my cousin Kyle. He was snowboarding in Marquette, MI (not sure what hill up there) and he musta gone for the double backy or something crazy because they had to induce him into a coma. I didn't want to ask for details...just to offer my support.

This kid is only 16 but i have never seen anyone go bigger off a wakeboard, or shoot higher out of the halfpipe. He has some serious talent, incredibly strong and way more potential then any one human deserves. No word on weather or not he was wearing a helmet...i didn't want to ask that...knowing that if the tramua was this serious then he musta really fawked it up.

Anyone know why they would have to induce him into a coma for head trauma?

Anyone in Marquette?

Just keep him in your thoughts...i was building my ol sn up with a 650 for him to rip this summer...lets hope he'll be able to get back up and at least be normal. they are going to try to wake him up tomorrow.

hey best wishes to the kid! it's been a rough season, my home mountain has lost 3 people this year.

too much hype is hitting the scene and they arn't being smart and recreational about it. everyone wants to be tanner hall or shawn white.

I ski but wrecking is wrecking. that snowpack gets hard especially in the park, like concrete. Hope he recoveres completely and can shread once again.

dude i got good vibes going your way, the only reason i have herd of inducing comas is when the pain is so severe it would cause his body to go into shock or have a heart attack from the stress. i have no clue in his case there is really no telling. i hope everything works out for the best and i get a chance to rip it with both of you this summer.

Hope your cuz gets well soon.

If they have to use drugs to induce him into a coma it's usually a bad indication of serious head trauma with brain swelling.

Inducing a coma is beneficial because a comatose brain uses less energy and oxygen than an awake and alert one.

A brain that's been shut down in a coma can survive longer with a limited supply of oxygen.

The coma also further reduces blood flow to the brain, which eases pressure in the cranium.

Reduced blood flow does mean less oxygen gets to the brain, but since comatose brains don't need much oxygen this isn't a problem.

you're exactly right about the hype. All hype, no safety. My cousin goes way too big to not be wearing a helmet...but i doubt he was. I want to see more pros advocating helmet use and make it a rule to be using the terrain park if not the whole ski hill.

I always wear a helmet. It isn't my crazy riding that make me wear one. First it was my uncles in Vermont....when i skied there they FORCED me to ride with one. I don't want to have to call your mom they would say.

I always wore one in VT just cuz the uncles were paying for everything. Gotta respect that. However, After i had a scary collision where i hit helmet to helmet with a skier stopped in the middle of teh hill at the bottom of a bluff. I launched it backside down teh hill pretty fast and huge and i 360d directly into this dumbass stooped in the middle. I knoecked him straight out of both his skis...and didn't come to rest until some 500yrds later. Everyone was fine minus one ski pole.

Funny thing was that a ski patroller was yelling to the guy to get out from the middle of the hill right before it happened and he saw the whole thing. Many bruises but we both rode off the hill on our own.

I know this has to be super serious cuz i have seen my cousin take some serious hits in football and get right back up. Come on cuz...you better wake up tomorrow.

yeah some places prob less then half are now requiring a park pass, spending 5 bucks and a half hour of your time watching a video before you can ride it.

pros almost always wear helmets in comps, just how the rules are. for vids and photo shoots they dont because it's not good looking.

i wear a full face helmet because i like to spend time in the trees. . :) and branches hurt.

I was in a coma for 10 days following a car wreck.

In the end, they were keeping me under to keep me from thrashing around, ripping the feeding and IV tubes our, etc. Until you find out otherwise, I'd suspect that's why they're doing it.

They kept these mitts on my hands and even tried tying my hands to the bed. I still pulled the tubes every chance I got.

U wake up groggy, not knowing where you are or what happened. It's kinda scary if you think about it....

Gotcha on the prayers.
Will do.

thanks buddy.

Today i found that they got him to respond to hand squeezes. Like you said GER it is just precautionary to keep him from making it worse.

It is prolly alot worse then we all think...but no one knows at this point what even happened. All his friends are since back in school from spring break. It had to happen on the last run of the last day they were up there....:nono:

But After reading some of your posts i feel mucho better. They say there may be some permanent damage to the brain stem but it is stil too soon to tell.

Again i just want to thank everyone for your continued support and prayer. Kyle is one tough ass kid, I am confident that he will make a full recovery and be ripping on my ol sn this summer at the claybanks ride.

Jeff told me today about his cousin. It is really sad to hear about it, but I'm sure that he pull threw it. He is a really awesome kid. Last summer I watched him pull out an air rally and the double back flip on his wake board. I'll be praying for him. :scared::rocketwhore:

The docs said I'd never walk again and be in a wheel chair my whole life w/ half my body paralyzed. For a bit there in the beginning they thought I may die.

I ride stand-up now.

For a bit after the coma my entire right side was paralyzed. I learned to do everything with my left hand and then got the use of my right side back.

The human body is an amazing machine. He may recover to where he's back to normal. The 1 thing that's for certain: this will change him.

Same exact thing happened to my good friend.

He is alive and well with some memory issues and he can't taste all that well.

Hope he is OK man!
