Registering a 2008 SJ in California

For everyone that is interested in getting a new ski out of state and bringing it into CA, here's the scoop so far:

You need to have a California Emissions Hang Tag in conjunction with your Title in order to register the ski in CA. The only thing is, after a long conversation with Yamaha, the ski does not have and is not offered with an Emissions Hang Tag that will allow it to be registered in CA. In short, they have an emissions hang tag, but California will not recognize it since it is not a CA hang tag. I thought I would be able to simply buy a ski in Arizona and bring it over to California and register it (of course after paying AZ tax AND CA tax). As of now I have a couple options to make this thing work:

1) Register it out of state with someone else's address and be done with this whole mess. Pretty sure this can be done.

2) Pull "something" off of my other Yamaha SJ and put it on my '08.... I mean my '91

3) Declare it as a damaged hull and register it as a home made boat. Not too familiar with this one, so I don't know how that will go.

Anybody have any other legitimate ideas?

No input on this but I am told that the same is starting to happen at NYSDMV office also. 06 and 07 would squeak through, but they are now training to stop the 08's from being registered. Only option would be to buy used out of state and void warranty and pay double sales tax. :hitwithrock:

you should only have to pay sales tax once.

when you go to register it in your state, you would then have to pay the difference in sales tax.

For example - I bought a used car in FL and paid 6% tax. I brought the car to TX and registered it here. Our sales tax rate is 6.25%

So I paid the 0.25% tax in TX

When registering in AZ you have to prove your a residence. If you had a friend or a relative here that could do it for you that would work. Also since you paid sales tax at the dealer here in AZ, you wont have to pay again at the Game and Fish commission when you register it.

It kind of sucks if you have a new 08 and have to go the route of buying a hull title/tags and registering it as a older ski. Especially if/when you go to resell it or something.

i think you may have a problem with registering it out of state too. i have a superjet with current ca. tags and registration. i was checked out by the oregon cops (i live in oregon) he told me i had 30 days from the time i bought it to reregister it in oregon. i'm guessing most states have similar laws.
