Other MIT proves two stroke is better and cleaner than a 4 stroke

MIT has sucessfully proven that a two stroke done right can provide almost twice as much power and with 2/3 as much pollution as a FOUR STROKE!

a prototype engine was done using a rotax bombardier 600cc snowmobile engine... the objectives: Cleaner, Faster, and remain Quiet.

You know what sucks though... Although the facts are out there, the eco-hippies will never believe it and 2 strokes will begin to die off no matter what. They're too busy protesting or too biased to admit that new technology has made substantial strides in efficiency. It works the same with diesels. Everyone thinks they're all dirty, nasty, and harmful to the environment but they just aren't anymore. In fact the engines in the past 5-10 years are better, more efficient, last longer meaning less waste when cars are trashed, and the fuel requires less energy to produce.

2 strokes are coming back and like madmat said evinrude already made the switch back. 3 years no maintance, no oil change, less pollution, better fuel economy.
here is a geeky engineer showing us how big his brain is and the possiblities of any 2 stroke.
http://engineeringtv.com/blogs/etv/archive/2008/04/17/direct-fuel-injection-solution.aspx

Directly injecting fuel into the cylinder just prior to combustion and metering the oil to exactly what the engine needs sounds fantastic but how does the crank get oiled?

D-Roc

I forgot!
you have to have oil directly injected to the bearings like the skidoo's rotax motors have, sled heads now get to summerize their sleds by pressing a button and also have a 2-3 year warranty on spark plugs from fouling.

i think Brp bought evinrude. and now they have the DI on the sleds. the motor that has this DI is called 600 E-tec.

but instead of using DI, boysen is developing a valve system for your exhaust port. so that you can have an ordinary intake system and still get better power/fuel economy/emissions. by closing the exhaust valve in time to not let unburnt mixture out.

Cool project... Anybody read the paper?

You can tell it was done like most college projects: Each group member writes a portion of the report. About the middle of the paper, a non-native English speaker takes over the report... grammar and spelling go to sh*t, along with the readability of the paper. It hurt my brain to continue on from that point. Don't throw too much respect at MIT if these kids can't even have someone review their about to be published technical report.....

I was on one of the first projects for a DI sled. Etec is very cool, definitely the future. We havent begun to tap into the potential of DI two strokes

That's pretty poor. I had 5 people in my engineering design group in college. We were only doing the preliminary design of a 4 seater prop plane instead of technological break throughs. The report was over 100 pages long, we stayed up all night to finish putting it together and get ready for the briefing, and still managed to proof read the thing...

My point exactly... Same scenario for our senior design project. We made damn sure there wasn't a single grammatical error. Maybe if you looked hard enough you might find a comma missing. That paper just amazes me, working as an engineer now, if I were to produce a document like that I would probably be fired for losing that client.... But then again, so would my reviewer..... I'm just upset, what they are doing and researching is cool, just a shame that a paper from some MIT students would end up to be complete trash as far as the composition goes.

did any of you read that it was MIT? It was some frogs fronm Qubec :twak:

To represent the Quebec, the QUIETS from the “École de
Technologie Supérieure” in Montreal will be participating
for its second year at this challenge.

“École de Technologie Supérieure” is the equivalent of the French Canadian MIT. I have had the honor of competing against a team Engineering Master Students in a submarine design contest-- despite their accent, they were very bright and placed very well, First or Second IIRC

who cares, more about cool 2 strokes. on a different note, my stihl weedeater is a 4 stroke that runs on 2 stroke fuel. it is called a 4 mix. it has good power but numbs my hands and is heavy. :( still a cool motor IMO.

leave it up to MIT students to "prove" something that has been known a long time.....even the simplest thermo theory shows that in ideal situations a 2-stroke can make twice the power of a 4-stroke...

The problem with 2-strokes has always been the reputation they have....and 4-strokes are easier to optimize because they have valves..
