Surfriding Mag Pump!

What about the poor mans mag, the stuffer cone? I feel the same way about it. I wont even ride a ski without one anymore.
Have any of you guys gone from that to a mag?
$300 vs $1000

ScottS and I have been comparing skis for months now. We both have -2" Matrix hulls with SS865 engines with all the extras. Our handpole lengths and many other features are identical but yet there still was a huge difference between our rides and the only thing left was the pumps. I ran a 144 setback mag with a 14/19 and he runs an OEM pump with 13/19 and a TBM stuffer. His ski was loose and playful in the surf and my ski was a monster with way too much power. Scott contacted X-scream several times thinking his engine was less powerful but in the end it was just the delivery of the power that was different. We made a ton of changes to both skis in the last several months and nothing made more of a difference than the Mag.

I thought the stuffer cone was an improvement (I think) but not worth it IMO. I tinkered with it for a little while before ditching it but could never really tell if it was really better or whether I wanted it to be better so my mind made it feel better. Yes, it's $300 for a stuffer cone and you can get a used mag pump with prop for $1k or less if you are patient. Look at this way though... $300 for a stuffer cone and I sold my stock pump with a 9/15 hooker prop for $375 with stock cone and a stubby cone for another $35. So my "poor mans mag" was worth $710 and my real mag with prop was purchased for $900 shipped. Just wanted to put things into perspective...

mag will definatly make the engine feel stronger and put more power to the water...NO DOUBT

for a pure surf boat IMO this is not always a good thing...some might argue...but I personally find it harder to keep a good flow with a mag as it is just TOOO good at hookup....I like my tires to spin a little bit

If you dont have one...GET ONE!

<this mesage has been brought to you by The Polaris Octane, Skat Trak, and the Watercraft Factory Dasa Powered Mag Pump Equipped Vision>

But no mention of who hooked you up with your MAG? I am glad your are loving it.

I agree with almost all of the great points made above.

I know that if more people tried one, then they would be hooked on the difference.

The more power and lighter your hull is, the more critical a MAG becomes.

I will agree on every point made so far about the Mag pump. I recently pulled my Mag and it feels like I lost 20hp. On the flipside, my ski slides out much better now than it did before and is alot more fun to ride.

Yes, I did. It is alot better. The TBM/R&D cones only give you a large hubbed oem pump. However, you are still running the same 6 long thick aluminum vaned oem pump versus a MAG's typical 12 thin short stainless vanes.

Once you go MAG you will never go back.

(unless you are a misguided idok!)

We keep saying "Slide" but this is actually not accurate of us. My ski slides just fine, even with the Mag. The problem is the immediate hookup I get the second I touch the throttle. The mag hooks up so well that the ski stops in mid slide and is thrust forward. Kinda hard to get a groove on to some good surf.

I will admit that what I speak of may just be a characteristic of the Matirix Hull but that is what I own so that is what I will comment on. I added a Mag to my Wife's Superjet and it does very well with it and is still loose and playful with the best of both worlds as others are describing.

So the one you guys are referring to is the 144mm? Stock is 140mm?
08 and later SJ already come with it....right?

Benny

Stock is 144. All years SJ come with the same 144 stock pump (but 08+ came with a longer shaft to make the pump extended). No SJ came with a mag pump.

this is actually one of the best posts in the thread

i was against the tbm stuffer as i tried one with no difference... pixie dust as i called it and the biggest waste of my money..

.. however.. i never ran a large hub prop.. and i know some of the local guys went this route and it makes a difference with the big hub prop

but then when you compare the prices... tbm stuffer/big hub prop vs mag/prop .. you are only $200 apart!

im always amazed that guys will spend all the $$ on a big motor and then not on the pump.... if you cant transfer the power of the motor, then whats the point?

i just added a 9/15 hooker into my 144mm set back mag and the difference was huge! best mod out there..

... now next point .. set back vs non set back .. ive had both... dont think its worth the difference in price, no extra performance seen

the design of a set back seems flawed to me as the bearings are way to close together.. just my opinion

now if someone was looking for a mag, i ran a 148 mag with a limited 701 set up... was the best set up i ever had

for all the money people will spend on candy ... save your $$ and buy a mag!

how you have your pump tuned is also going to affect its attitude. i have a 140mm mag, with a medium cone (paid 700  ) and a skat swirl 12.5/17.5 cut back 3mm (Art recommended). if you touch the throttle in a slide it hooks up instantly. so i put a 3mm spacer in it and it changed when it hooks up. now it doesnt really hook up till past 1/4 throttle. that gives me a little bit to play around with. my next step is to bore the nozzle.
