I got bored this weekend and decided to goof around with some fiberglass, not so much because its something I needed but I wanted a little practice working with glass. I took an old protec plate that I was running on my RN, some duct tape, clingwrap, some 12oz biax and epoxy resin and made this. Its still very rough, needs some sanding/grinding to fit better but you get the general idea. Right now it has 2-3 layers of 12oz, its sturdy buy no where near rideplate tough. I am now debating wether I should a) use it as a mold and lay the 'actual' part up inside it or b) just start adding layers to the inside to build it up and use it

Nothing ive ever made with poly has been as strong as with epoxy.
maybe its how I mix them though.

Since you pulled it off of a plug (existing part) this needs to be your mold. Lay it up a little thicker on the outside and make a part from it.
Epoxy.
That was my thinking, but I figured it would be possible to make it work both ways just unsure if it was good enough quality or strong enough to maybe pull a couple parts off it.

I’ve got a carbon/Kevlar rideplate that is about that thick. It’s held up OK, it’s going to need to be replaced at some point so yours probably won’t hold up that long.
Can you pull parts from it as is? Yes. Just don’t expect it to last forever (I don’t think you do).

Good to know, my thinking was us this as a mold, 3-4 (maybe 5-6) layers of the same glass (12oz) then a layer or two carbon/kevlar over that for strength. I only plan on making a couple from it, while making parts yourself is cheaper sometimes its just easier to pay somebody else. This is more or less to burn out a couple different styles to find which one I like the best then make one tough one.

wow nice! i have been thinking about doing this recently as wll...I'd like a nice LIGHT composite plate for my fx/f1
I got an FX1 plate here....but its finned and would be tough to splash. Honestly once I am done I wouldnt be surprised if the OEM SJ rideplate is lighter..while not very tough those things are paper thin and very light compared to aftermarket plates.

don't use carbon/kevlar on your mold. that is a waste of good supplies.

that may be kinda tough to use as a mold. i made my mold last night in a few hours. poly resin with 3/4 layers of mat. sanded and glossed smooth with west system
