Surfriding Herbie Fletcher circa 1987

That last ride he was chased for a long way, looks like he hit some chop dropped down and eventually dragged behind the ski to avoid huge white water. Nice surf stance carving, he was "ahead of his time" for 87.

I got to ride With Herbie a couple of times at my home break Oil Pies in the early 90s, truly a great guy
late 90s I towed him into a wave at Rincon, Pissed everyone off until they found out who they were flipping off
One of those skis from that clip is still in Santa Barbara

herbie dominated the north shore for nearly three decades...i think he can do whatever he wants...plus as he said in the video he would go out on days when it was closed out....

It was a joke, and btw, when I moved to Oahu in '92, there was no jetskiing on the North Shore permitted. (I even got a ticket and had to go to court for doing it once around Haleiwa, not in a surf zone and well away from shore) 3 decades is stretching it a bit. Jet Waves had to get special permits to film there---I missed hearing about them filming by a few weeks otherwise I would have been up there to watch.

I was talking about surfing. He was one of the pioneers in the 1960s and was still charging pipe into the early nineties on a longboard none the less..

I met Herbie Fletcher about 15 yrs ago while surfing at Lower Trestles and asked him if he still rode surf on his ski. He said he didn't. He didn't really give a reason why he quit and he seemed like he didn't really want/care to talk about skis. He came across as a little full of himself. Who knows, maybe I just caught him at a bad time. Either way I give big props to Herbie for being a pioneer of our sport, especially for big wave riding but it bums me out that he seemed to turn his back on the sport. Randy Laine, who rode with Herbie back in the day and has ridden even bigger surf at Todos Santos Island still rides with us regularly here in Oceanside.
