Among the benefits Google touted are "speed, simplicity and security," Pichai and Upson said. "We are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware, and security updates."
Google is talking to Netbook partners now, and the project will become open-source "soon." It will run on members of the x86 and ARM processor families, Google said.

No Vista really is that bad! More like it set us back 15 years as far as resources required/reason for resources required.

It is an insult to technicians everywhere. I may actually poop on mine throw it away when 7 gets here. I mean I'm running XP anyway and it is just sitting on a shelf but I may just take a crap on it and light it on fire because its so bad.

The stuff I saw about Chrome OS was that it was a new, modern operating system. A break from everything. It will be mainly for web based applications instead of applications running on the local machine. Even Linux has legacy support, bloat, etc that leads to slow boot up and security holes. Chrome sounds like it's going to be a lean, mean machine.

It's kind of a step back to the old mainframe with text terminals mentality. That was a more efficient time. They did studies back then. When people using text terminals had to wait more that a fraction of a second for a response after hitting enter got frustrated and lost productivity. Look at how bloated and slow the web is today.

Maybe Chrome can get us back to the good old days.

Many "inside" people are saying this particular release is not meant to replace Windows as the leading desktop PC OS, or even compete with it.

It sounds like it is meant to run on smaller machines, or at least it was not designed to handle major applications.

But if I had to guess how things are going to play out, Chrome OS is going to test a new direction in operating systems, and if it works, they will develop and launch an OS targeted directly at the Windows audience.
