Drain Plugs

l think l have come up with an answer to a problem.Wanted to put drain plugs in my ski,but no room below the scupper and exhaust.ln my work over the years l have used Rivnuts.Basically a rivet with threads in it.These are used commonly to anchor down roof racks when you don't have room or can't get a nut inside a roof panel.

l had some aluminum rivnuts,so l drilled an 3/8" hole, put 5200 sealent around the hole and then installed it like a rivet.Got a couple of small stainless steel bolts and screwed them in.Under most uses you would not be takeing these out all the time,so l plan on putting a little silcone on them and then tightening down.Diff would have to be careful of the threads because of the rivnuts being aluminum. But you could intall these on most skis without having to open up the ski.

I've got drain plugs. (for a '93 blaster). My water was coming in thru the tray. (I guess the stock fiberglass couldn't handle my considerable girth)
When I did the foothold job, I drilled holes in the rear. It took 2 weeks to dry out with the glass cut out for hold install, but it did dry out.
I installed the drains as a "what-if" kinda thing. Not a drop since tray reinforcement and foothold install.
But they are ther if I need them.

A rivnut is something new to me. I had to install the drain on the exhaust side vertically to have room.

Bringing this back up because I want to use some rivet nuts on my REV hull. Do they require a special tool to install them or can a regular rivet tool be used?

you need a special tool. I agree with Mark here... you need tapers threads to seal. I drilled a hole, brushed epoxy in it, then re drilled and taped the epoxy to use a little brass plug

or you can just silicone the threads everytime.not a big deal.

MARK44,does the epoxy actually grab the nylon blocks?i was under the impression that it wouldn't stick to it?

the stainless rivnuts are a little stiffer when you lock them but not impossible.
