I'll argue this to the death because I live on a lake and yeah we do get huge waves occasionally...but there are other types of hard core riding, like niagara, that do not have waves.

Surf riding is the shizzle though... and my personal favorite:hail:

so we are talking about what peoples definition is, not what is generally used in the market.

And yes, I do believe that you can freeride in places other than surf, and that freestyle competitions take place in the ocean also.

there are large waves = surfing experience... So I would consider that on the cusp of freeride

Freeride - The art of riding a STAND UP jet ski (or blaster) in the surf. Consists of surfing waves, slashing waves, and jumping. On shore activities include a lot of beer and alchohalic beverages, girls, salty nuts, all are friends, and kissing peoples asses that don't want us there. Your ski will need re-inforced, new handle pole, and bracket eventually.

Holy crap, I didn't mean surfing as on a board. I thought that's what it's called when you let go of the handle pole and ride the wave. Someone want to enlighten me as what that stellar move is called? Notice I put "surfing the wave", not hanging ten dude.

Nothing wrong with surfing. Some of the pioneers of Jetski freeriding were surfers. If you ignore the surfing aspect of freeriding your just a cheap imitation of MX.

the major influence of freeriding is surfing. Look at the top freeriders, joe kenney, taylor curtis, jerry brandon. They all ride without footholds, because with your feet side by side you have no style surfing a wave, and style is a huge part of surfing, and true freeriding.

I surfed while I lived in San Diego. The board is still in my living room in Cleveland, unfortunately collecting dust...
