cant keep umi steering nut tight??

any tricks or solutions- on my umi turn plate- the main nut w the little allen screw keeps coming loose, i cant tighten the little allen screw tight enough w/out stripping it, as soon as i get in the water and make a few turns it loosens up again - theres not enough room for a locking nut?? and i dont want to spot weld it - any suggestions??

Spray the bolt with brake cleaner and then put a lot of red loctite on the nut and put it on. Should stay all Summer..

You could also put a regular nut on the top, tighten everything down where you want it and drill a hole for a cotter pin. I did that on an old system a few years back, UMI did something similar for a while.

Mine is cotter pinned like Ross said. On another ski I bought "jam nuts" from McMaster Carr. They are thinner than normal nuts, you put two of them on. tighten the first one to an acceptable steering feel, then tighten the second one against the first one...voila it's LOCKED.

Are you refering to the crimp nut supplied by Blowsion? (1st pic) If so that sucks because I just bought one of those hoping it would work. I've been jam nutting (2nd pic) mine also which works fairly well but still loosens over time, usually at the most in opertune time. I like Stantons idea of smashing a regular lock nut out of round but Ross's cotter pin is problably the only thing that will work long term. BTW Ross, What type drill bit did you use to drill through a stainless nut and the stainless center threaded stud? Are you using a castle nut or a regular nut?

I have been using the nut from Blowsion for about a year now and it has worked just fine. Just make sure you use the right size allen to tighten the little bolt.

As far as the bit...I'm don't really remember the size...but small. I have a ton of those bits because I use them to drill bolts for safety wire on the road race bike. And you break them as you go...

Thanks Ross. I was actually asking what type of bit you use which can drill thru stainless, everything I've tried doesn't seem to work very well. As for now I'll try the Blowsion nut, I haven't actually used mine yet, I was just concerned because of this thread. If the Blowsion nut slips then I'll try Stantons method, and if that fails then I'll do the "drill a cotter pin thru stainless" method. I know that will work

cotter pin for the win.

Use a brand new bit, start small and work your way up to the size you need. drilling in steps has been the key for me when drilling stainless.
