Can i build a custom SJ for under 5k?

I seem to have bad luck finding a local round nose, and my parents are not willing to let me drive far for one (even though im 19, i need to use their car to tow. There was a shooting that was from a craigslist add so i kinda see their point) So i started thinking. Would it be possible to build a ski with a lightweight hull and a gp800 motor for less ten 5k assuming i can find used parts?

That$ a little tight IMO. Get your parental units in here and find a ski from a member. You will not get shot.

One of the cheapest lightweight hulls I've seen is the trick hull from Highroller with hood and pole for $3500 but it's not in production just yet. Other than that, you've got the REV for $3500 for just the hull and it's from WDK so good luck getting one. You might be able to pull off a GP800 conversion on a SJ hull for under $5k but finding parts is still going to be a challenge.

My advice... hold out for a SJ in ATL. Tell your parents that any thug in ATL is too stupid to realize that a stand up ski is worth anything. You'll probably find one and be riding before you could get the parts for a gp800 conversion. Save the fancy motor/lightweight hull thing for next winter. A nice RN will be a huge step for you anyway if memory serves me and you've been riding a 550.

Im still looking for a round nose on here, just trying to find a good deal thats semi local.

But im also considering other ideas.

If i bought an aftermarket lightweight hull and had a 701 square or round nose would i be able to just swap it all over or is there a difference?
Ive seen squares pretty local, i just hate the look. But if the parts are compatable i could find a square for 1500 easily and put it in a light hull.
Anyone care to explain the differences in aftermarket hulls as far as compatablity with yamaha parts?

Lets say my ultimate goal is a lightweight hull and a gp800 motor. Could i skip the round nose hull and just go straight to the lightweight with a 701 and then worry about a 800 motor when i get more cash? Thats what im wanting to know, because from what ive seen, a 701 is not hard to come by at all.

I think the only diif between round and square is the midshaft assembly. And of course only 94 and 95 squares had 701cc motors in them.

So yes you could use all of the parts from a square or round in a AM hull.

So if i bought a modded square for 1000-1500 and a hull for 3500 i could have a fully running ski by swapping the square parts into the hull?

I need to look around at some more hulls, ive only seen the WDK ones and the wamiltons ski.

A built 701 is plenty of power and then yes you could slowly assemble a GP800 package and drop it in. But IMO there are other better 701 based big bore options that would be around the same price, could be just as reliable, and would not require custom exhausts and stuff. Just my .02.

As long as the new hull had a pole/steering and a hood then yes everything should switch over (except the midshaft assembly).

I have a WDK Envy and it was almost 6k shipped. (Hull, hood, pole/steering, pump shoe, ride plate, crate)

How much was the shipping? And wheres wdk located? Ohio or something like that?
When you say the midshaft assembly what exactly do you mean? Is that something thats included with the hull or i would have to buy? I dont know much about skis but learning is always fun.

Aren't the 94-95 midshafts the same as the RN anyway? So I think a 94-95 SN would be a complete swap. The big advantages of a RN are looks, 62t case instead of a 61x, and fiberglass topdeck to save a few pounds.

The other thing to consider is getting a cheap SN and doing the top deck conversion. The bottom hulls are the same anyway and a top deck conversion can be done for just a few more dollars over the cost of a RN...it'll cost you time though.

You're fairly local. If you want to ride my SN with a fairly built 701, you're welcome to. I ride down at Tobesofkee.

WDK is in Oregon. The midshaft is the short shaft inside the engine compartment that ties the motor to the pump. It will not be an issue finding one or buying one new from someone.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think that was the only driveline change from square to round. Well that and the switch to dual carbs.

Something else for you and the parental units to consider. I would say most guys have driven some serious miles to pick up skis and the good deals sell instantly so if you snooze....you WILL lose.

I drove to NJ, a friend of mine drove to OK and back and rode the next day!!

The ski posted in this thread seems like a good deal at 3500. I would go with something like that, especially if its ur first ski. Plus if u buy from here ur chances of getting shot ok da dont exist.
About the towing... Someone in this kids area help him out!! I'm sure someone can help with towing the ski for him, even if for a small fee (cost of fuel maybe).
