Can i build a custom SJ for under 5k?

running a few miles every day is a lot cheaper then a lightweight hull and can be less time consuming then conversions! haha idk bout anyone else but i have a few pounds to lose:dance:

shadow im in your boat, i think the way to go is find a cheap modded square with a 701, ride it while savin up some cash, get a round hull and shave the hood:biggrin:

Im 19 and i weight 130 lbs. I dont think losing weight is a good idea, mainly because i prefer to stay alive.

Just buy a nice square and save money so you can get your own car/truck to tow...lol

Id have to have one custom made, most hitches only fit v6s (single exhaust)
And none that i know of are designed for the California special bumper i have.
Its rated at 1000lbs tow capacity though.

I know what you mean man. I just sold my Honda S2000. Kinda depressing but I think of the many hundreds of dollars that I'm not spending on a car payment every month and it cheers me back up. Anyway, the S2000 guys came up with a detachable hitch so they could tow race tires to the track. Then once the race tires were on, they'd pull the pins holding the hitch and hit the track. Obviously those kind of hitches aren't rated at much but it'd be enough to tow a stand up.

Umm that mustang will pull over 1000 pounds easily. We pulled 2 stidowns and a standup on a triple trailer 1/2 the way across the country with one.

But besides that I think you are looking at things the wong way. I know you want a lightweight hull but spending $3500 on an aftermarket hull won't net you anything but $20 pounds is weight savings. The gp800 isn't more horsepower until you spend big bucks on it and make it a big bore. If you want light weight you have to really spend the money. $6000 or so on just the hull for real weight savings.

Buy you a ski/motor combo that you can afford at the time. The more time you spend on the water praticing the better you will be. If you are coming from a 550 to a SJ it will take you YEARS until you NEED a ski better than that ski on the first page. The ski doesn't make a good rider it is time on the water.

Exactly. If i find something within a hour or so drive im sure my parents would let me use their sequoia, but so far all ive found is alabama and florida. I might end up picking up one of those skis. Id like to find a nicely modded square in georgia for $1500 or less, then get the carbon 08 hull being sold in the sale section and work on it. But i can only find nice RNs or 650 squares I might end up spending 3000-3500 on a nice RN and just ride it.

now you're talking! Or even a nice round nose like the one offered in a earlier post. Can't go wrong with the 701 platform. You can continue to mod it as you grow into it. Good luck in your search and gettin wet!

You will be able to pull a ski easily. We pull two standups and a double trailer with a scion xb. Lets just say the manufactur doesn't rate a tow capacity beyond a bike. So you will be able to tow just fine.

Another thing you will have to find a way to get a hitch on that mustang anyway-how will you go to the lake/river/ocean with it, borrow your parents car?

My opinion is you DO NOT want to start out with a custom ski. Lets just say the more goodies and aftermarket you go the more money you might have to throw at it to keep it running and/or maintence. Plus you don't know how long you might be doing this hobby. Buy stock with some goodies and add on when you have the money and time and when you skills start to improve. I see a lot of people start building these massive skis and their skill level isn't compatable which leads to emergency room vists or the scared factor of the power and it just sits. So start small you can always add on.

Just my opinion. But GET A HITCH!!!

Im thinking about it. I messaged him but i dont recall if i made an offer. If he will sell it for 3000 ill probably end up getting it unless i find a built square for cheap.
