Beginner Freestyle Tricks

Hey guys/gals,

This year was my first year on a standup and I enjoyed it very much. Its a 650 SJ and has a few general mods. I have a pole setup (Roundnose plan to shorten) that I will be putting on in the spring.

The boat has 24-7 footholds(fake), slutty hood mod, turf, and will have hand holds.

This year I got the hang of riding around, turning aggressive both ways (best I could), jumping boat wakes & lake rollers, half of a submarine (had water go chest high), fountains (not bad, but not totally vertical), and riding backwards with my body over the hood.

Is there a beginners guide with instructions to doing these tricks better, and can you suggest some more tricks I can learn? I catch on pretty quick, follow instructions well (lady tells me different) and am comfortable with the boat, and trying new things.

Any suggestions, or links I can catch up on?

Thanks all.:cool2:

And you have to check it to see what has been added, stuff you never notice.

I add to posts, so unless there is a new reply it does not go to the top.

the power360 is actually kinda cool....seems more of a 'european or japanese' trick...you really dont see it being done alot...

glad to see you did the hood mod...thats the #1 issue for the square..

It's a fun trick to do...

Looking back on it I would say just start doing nose stabs right off the bat then inverted nose stabs then huge inverted nose stabs then BR's and then back flips.

I still have not done a BR or a backflip but looking back I wish I would have just bought a properly equipped ski (like you did) and just started with the big crap. I would be that much better now.

Shoot for the moon.

if you have holds there is no reason to build up to BR's if you want to do BR start there.

I started working on BR the first day I bought my ski and did lots of them that weekend. I landed them all inverted and mostly nose first. I still have never attempted a nose stab

Properly equipped ski might be stretching it... The boat had some issues when I got it that I had no idea about when purchasing it. Being totally new to SJ's(never even rode one before I bought it) I had no idea what to look for.

I am thankful that I did get a sound hull (check for cracks in the common square places and there is none) with footholds already installed, and a decent turf job.

The 650 has to go, but I doubt I'll be able to pull that off unless a Michigan/Western NY member can hook me up with a meeting in Windsor. I work for a logistics company and the taxes/ppwk for a motor which carries none, will be a nightmare.

I just paid UPS $57.50 for a Roundnose pole that was valued @ $100. I know UPS is a bad way to go. You US guys are lucky to have the standup market you do. Helps keep prices and avaliability reasonable to allow you to grow with and purchase things for the sport.

A BR might be a stretch. I like hood tricks too. Once the power comes into the hull (a year maybe..) than I'll think about going inverted.

Haha! Can't beat the classics man! Some of the pics I see on here of Pankake and other riders is just ridiculous. In a few years I'll need to take part in these freeride days!

You need to take part in the freerides ASAP. It's not a bunch of guys out there being pros. It's fun and grat atmosphere for all riders to enjoy the water:arms:

Flatwater : Subs, fountains, hood riding forward and backwards, bull dogs, supermans, setup wakes over and over and over and over and over again.

Well, I can't do a sub to save my life.
Every time I try I end up slapping the water but the nose stays dry.

your not committing. Dont gott abe fast but atleast good and on plane.

BRAP and get the ski out of the water, not trying for hight just a skip, then brap when you hit water again. Lean a little bit forward, squat and look down the pole from behind the pole pad and extend the arms. It forces you to push the nose down a bit more with your hands too.

It's alot simplier once you do it, it becomes insanely easy and dont gotta think about it. Hop bounce and sink it

hell i dont even have to hop bounce anymore just a little push down with my legs then a shove forward and ........whered i go :dunno:

but seriously listen to advice already given to you...get to at least one freeride this year!!! you wont regret it....not only are there some of the nicest people on here that attend but it also kinda forces you to nut up and push yourself....or you can do like i did last year at wave rave....stand around most of the weekend talking  hell chuck could have called me mini him with all the time i spent on the beach:cool2: j/k chuckles...

going to as many freerides as i can is the highlight of my summers
