Its a thin metal cap over them. Its so you cant mess with the adjustments and help pollute the air more...lol You can drill a small hole through them and pull it out with a hook tool, or just drill a big enough hole to adjust the screw.

Those lines are aluminum. I use the 18" toilet supply lines from home depot/plumbing store. They are 3/8" copper tubing with a chrome coating. Just cut to desired length and seal with 3M 5200 or whatever you like to seal things with. They are only $3-4.
