Have you done all the standard checks? Compression, leak down test, test the one-way valve on the tank, ohm check the coils, etc? With the symptom described, it could be a lean condition in the carb/carbs - barely runs, then pegs redline, then bogs - is this responding to the throttle or on...
Lots of possibilities as to why that failed. Crank seals, lean front carb, crank bearing coming apart, water ingestion, etc. There are some good places to pick up replacement parts, but the best thing you can do is find a competent mechanic in your area that will work with you to get your...
Yeah, heading south. The sunless summer has taken its toll on me. I'm hoping for a home close to a lake, and just a short drive to WF's! If you ever want to come down for the finals, I'll have a spare bedroom or two... and you know there will always be spare skis!
Yeah, it looks like it's going to be a great GO this year. I'm bummed that I will miss it. Keep up w/the cool build, I want to hear all about it, and look forward to your rideplates...
Limiting rope is good even for jumping boat wakes... if the ski gets away from you with the pole up, and hits pole first, good bye nose or pole. My ski has a scupper and it works GREAT in the surf, but I've got a stock bilge and a Rule 500 in there too. Fluid Film is THE stuff for surf riding...
Fluid Film works wonders for keeping the salt from giving you heck later on. Spray the engine down with it and ride! CRC makes a product that works well too, but I can't remember the name...
I had a plastic box on my trailer, held on w/ a aluminum plate and U bolts. It lasted about 4 years then the bottom broke out and the box fell off. I switched to aluminum - Pro-Tec truck box that was built to fit under a tonneau cover inside the truck bed.
You are going to have to drill a 1" hole in the rear of the ski on both sides. Hog the foam out with the drill bit, about 12" or so deep. Insert 1 stick of dynomite into each hole. Light the fuse and step away from the ski.
BAM! Problem solved.
Get a Clymer manual and join PWCToday.com. There are WAY more 550 guys over there in the vintage section. Not trying to steer you away from the X, but you'll definitely get more answers over there.
The only way to tell if it is truly a 550 or a 440 is to pull the head and take a measurement of the bore. The pump could be swapped out, the exhaust is definitely 440 style, and the small carb indicates 440 (in an 87 hull).
Hahaha, that's funny. I thought it would be good for my 750stx the kids ride. The "cheap" Amsoil is $26.50 a gallon. Kawi is around the same. Gas station brand (Chevron) is 6.99 a quart, I used to just pick that up on the way to the lake, but with the rebuild, I'm being a bit more cautious...
