You say you "lined up the woodruff key", that's on the flywheel, but did you lock down the the new stator with the timing marks lined up?

For the type of riding you describe I'd keep the SJ and put the $$ towards some handling and power upgrades.

If it was mine the first thing I would do is cut back the plug wires. Maybe better yet, get a new coil with good plug wires.
