Rode my FX with a Factory Pipe and stock pump for 10 years and thought it was great. The pump is definitely too small but it's very, very ridable. The best mod ever to improve your capabilities is ride time! Winter is a good time for a pump project.
I use Permatex clear silicone to seal the pump shoe to the hull. 5200 would probably work well yoo, but could make it a biatch to remove the pump to change props or bearings. Either way, you need to have a perfect seal between the pump shoe and hull or you'll have cavitation.
Two biggest gains on the FX are a pump mod (kawi 650 pump or SJ pump) and a Factory "B" pipe. Neither will affect your reliability if done properly. Next 2 biggest gains (in my opinion) are a shortened pole and Tubbies, again no affect to reliability either.
on closer look, I have to agree with Tom 21. It looks like someone just poured some resin on the bottom (probably trying to bond whatever the nut looking thing is). It's probably just really brittle and cracked. I've never seen an FX with that type of resin flow inside, I'm betting on previous...
