I've got a dead one here too, got it second hand, looked to be in good shape externally. It kills the spark energy somehow so it looks like it functions but the spark is too weak to actually run the engine.
Scuff those battery mounts with sandpaper to get a good idea of where the brass insert is and what it might be filled with. You can then mark the center and drill it, gradually increasing size you can probably get to a point where you can dig the rest of the epoxy out or run a tap into it to...
The biggest annoyance would be having to unplug it every time you took your hood off, and getting it to stay there. I have had plenty of clips and bases break or come unglued sitting on the bottom, not sure they would survive hanging upside down all the time.
