IMO a sealed or semi sealed cavity is better regardless of what kind of foam it is. The open tray, pool noodle stuffed situation really leaves a lot of room for water to fill and negate the buoyancy of the small amount of foam you fit in there.

How crazy is it that they found their way into that break at all and thought they where good. OR that the rental company didn't warn them not to go there? It's not like you are just riding along in the ocean then bam, inside the wedge, they had to see those waves as they where heading in.
