Picture of What "not to do"

After Daytona I said,"I gotta cool out" on the beer and cigarettes.

Well, It's after Daytona. I'll be 47 this Thursday. I'm at least 20lbs overweight, addicted hopelessly to nicotine and as flexible as a dry twig.

My plan is to quit beer during the week at first. This will help in reducing smoking (beer & smokes kinda go hand in hand) prior to the actual "quit".

The quit will be cold turkey. I've tried patches, gum, even chantix which turned me into a zombie.

I won't be able to drink beer after quitting smoking......this is the reason for many past fails.

Any advise will be appreciated, not only by me, but by my wife as well!

im with ya man. i need too but just cant
Thanx for the support!
Compared to me, you're a young man. I'm feeling the affects of a pretty wild lifestyle for many years.
Birthdays don't mean much after you've had so many.

Don't get me wrong....I'm likely in better shape than a lot of other 47 year olds just from staying active...i.e: jet ski etc..

But the aches and pains that I have are mostly due to lack of flexibility.

I wheeze in bed at night. That scares me. Smoking has got to go.

Drinking has to go to quit smoking.

Then streatching and walking followed by cardio and running.

there is no easy solution..its going to be a rough path but its for the better..

someday you'll want to see manny get married and have kids :)

for the beer..try buying a set quanity for the week, if you finish early then you are done

teach yourself to ration..then make it smaller and smaller

as time goes on it will get easier...

do you want to quit drinking 100% as well?

Cold turkey is cold turkey for the smokes...thats just plain out going to suck

will power and emotional redirection is the only method...and you are going to pace and be very edgy....

the munk WILL pick up on this.....be prepared for another fight

im exteremely inflexible as well....A PT told me THIS WEEKEND told me that inflexiblity in guys is majority of the time related towards lowerback/hammies

start with touching your toes (or trying to)...you'll be amazed..after 3-5 days your fingers will hit the ground

baby steps, dont overdue it...a 5 minutes stretch 2x a day will do WONDERS for you

then as it gets easier you can start adding time and intensity

Beer is not a "physical" addiction for me. I've quit it for weeks in the past just to make sure! But I smoke double when I drink beer. And I AM a nicotine junkie.

I totally believe it

and I know it only takes ONE to restart things all over again....

I wish I could offer you an easy solution....but its such a personal thing its hard

quitting both at once might even be easier than just one at a time..total denial of gratification

sunflower seeds/pistachios may help AT TIMES

just to keep your hands busy

if you can go for a time, reward yourself....a port job and some compression will ease your tension
That's true. The oral fixation is a big part of it. Gum, lollipops, keep the hands and mouth busy.

But I'll be an ass for a while. Angry, irritable...my wife is not looking forward to that, even as much as she HATES cigarette smoke.

Drinking is just something that found it's way into my day. I have no problem leaving it alone. Smoking is different, as you know. I have to stop the one to stop the other.

Idok is right about flexibility. I was seeing a back-snapper quite often. He said it wasn't doing any good because my muscles were so tight. He'd adjust, and my muscles would pop it right back out.
He sent me to a massage theropist. She would loosen me up a day b4 my appt with the chairopractor. It worked.
But she taught me some "streatching" excersizes and I haven't had to go back for a long time.
Flexibility is key for back and neck problems.

i am working with a new proprietary laser system that eliminates stressors on the nervous system. we had advanced training this weekend (why i missed daytona again). we were trained on a stop smoking protocol with our machine and a one week supply of nutritional supplements. if you are ready to quit they tell us we can offer a money back gurantee it is that good. one of the developing doctors has been doing it for 10 years never gave any money back. i am just waiting on the supplements, they will take away the withdrawl and cravings.

i am a little far from you but here is the parent companies website
biovedawellness.com the stop smoking program is not listed yet but will be very soon.

I had a friend that finally quit smoking, and he had the same problem when drinking. He said 'You can't drink without smoking. Just like you can't poop without peeing.' :261: Not sure where he came up with that, but it's true.

Just think how much money you'll save not buying cigarettes.

it is a cold laser, think of red a flash light : )
and only vitamins and herbs no drugs. i am chiropractor we're not allowed near drugs (for good reason : )

the laser is to clear any stressors your body has to nicotine, the other 4000 chemicals in cigarettes (true by the way including sugar)

the key component is you have to want to quit, nobody or chemical is stronger than the human mind. if you want to quit this will work, it was desinged to take away the cravings and withdrawls from quitting. those are the things make people not quit nicotine and cigarettes are physically addictive probably more so than heroine and alcohol.
