Do you have kids? Grand-kids? Do you want to see them grow up? Smoking is suicide, plain and simple. You are shortening your life and lowering your existing quality of life. Don't you want to be able to run longer, ride longer, f%$# longer? Quit. Smoking is for losers who want to die.

My home away from home.
I quit copenhagen cold turkey after 12 yrs. The only time I wasn't chewing was when I was eating or sleeping for the most part. Then I quit drinking cold turkey this July 1st. I had my first beer at 8 am ish and kept drinking all day. Just maintained a buzz, but didn't get wasted. I wanted to do it on my own, but found out I needed to see my doc first. My body didn't like the loss of alcohol at all. I had gnarly heart palpitations, panic attacks it friggin sucked bad. I had the wife take me to the emergency center, cuz I thought I was going to blow up. And they won't prescribe any meds to help you if you are an addict to anything. I had to wait to see my regular doc and get some mellowing drugs.

When I quit chewing I was chewing gum and sunflower seeds to help out. It worked pretty good.

When I quit drinking I drank a LOT of bottled water to help. And went from weighing 165-170 to 145-150 depending on physical activity. And I am digging eating sugary foods now. I missed out on a lot of good chow for the last 10 yrs of drinking! And have more money, but have no clue what the wife does with it. (I gotta look into this)

Bottom line as others have said, you have to want to quit.

Sack up and get healthy. I'm pullin for ya.

I quit smoking over ten years ago. I drink like a fish still. Yet, I'm taking some time off after this trip to get my bearings, and let my liver heal.

I quit cold turkey, my girlfried (now wife) asked me if i had ever thought about quiting,,, I said to her, ask me to quit.... she did. I quit, I was ready to quit. I was smoking 2-3 packs a day and in the bar 5-6 nights a week. I now have 2 girls to watch grow up & I think its time so take control of my drinking. I'll be right there with you drink'n water, for the most part.

cold turkey is the way to go, its just you, take control

Had no beer since Daytona til tonight. (it's my weekend) (I work Sunday thru Thursday) Smoked a lot less. This is how I'm gonna taper it. Beer only on weekends til it's tapered down. Then The "quit".
Both will go until I'm over the smokes.

My medical bills were just over 30K after my lung collapsed. After that, it was easy to quit. There is only one way. Put them down and walk away. It is a total biotch but its just the only way. It also helps to have a support system which I'm sure the members of this site would gladly help with that. I was only 31 when my lung collapsed and I almost died as a result. Trust me, you don't want a chest tube inserted with no meds and while awake. Its a whole new kind of pain. Two weeks in the hospital and 6 more weeks off work. Quitting smoking will be the hardest thing you ever accomplish.

ive never smoked anything and dont plan on it... smoking sux IMO... i vow for everytime you would have bought a pack, instead put that money in a jar (covered on the outside w paper) and after a week peek in, then after a month peek in, and finally when ur 100% smoke free act like a child and toss it all up in the air, and then go spend it on you of course (prolly ski related)....

I quit smoking ciggs like two yrs ago and drinking about 2 yrs ago. The ciggs I took the chantix but that stuff messed me up in the head and stopped after a month. But that was enough for me to be able to quit. I mean u still have to have the will power.
I played a game in my head. And would just say to my self if I wanted one . 1 hour or 1 day and just keep going. Its all in your head so if u can trick your self or fight your self u can win. And drinking just got old to me soo just stopped. But found a new addiction. JETSKIS

i hate cancer sticks, a family member on my wifes side got lung cancer and doesn't have much more time.. very sad.. but the worst part is only one person on that side of the family has quite.. almost that whole side smokes.. i can't stand the family events when we are all done eating or opening presents and its time to go out side and see who can die the quickest. heres to you guys who were strong enough :439:

The real answer to quitting smoking and drinking is to use negative association Dan. I'll give you a couple good examples.

For every beer or cigarette you consume;
Option 1) Manny gets a half hour free reign of the house with a hammer,
option 2) You have to smash yourself in the nuts once with the same hammer,
option 3) usually involves a football team and a train but you don't have a daughter so I guess it really doesn't really apply...
option 4) do I really need to go on?

My bet is that after one week of this therapy, you'll either want to quit everything or take up something so much worse, beer and cigarettes are the least of your worries, lol.

Good luck Dan! :bigok:

Or just be an adult and STOP.

If you decide to go with the hammer to the nuts, please have a camera handy and post a link.
Thank you.

You must have never been a smoker. If only it was that easy.

Dan, you didn't fail. You just haven't completely succeeded yet!

Keep trying!

I quit 15 years ago. I was a 3 pack a day smoker. When I do something... I do it all the way! I quit cold turkey after having just bought and opened a fresh carton of smokes.

I used lots of techniques to quit, and they all helped, but the fact is that I quit because I was pregnant, and it was much easier to do it for the health of my child than for myself.

So, do it for your wife if you can't do it for yourself. Think about her hell when you get lung cancer and she has to take care of you while you die. These very negative thoughts about the effects of cigs helped me a lot at the time. Morbid as they may be.

LOTS OF GUM helped. LOTS of gum.

Finding something to keep my hands busy helped. Keep a pen handy that you can fidget with it when you want a smoke.

I found that smoking was more than 50% habit. Change what you do during those times that you want a smoke. After dinner? go for a walk instead.... or screw it... indulge in something else, like chocolate or some other flavor-related reward. Fat is better than dead!

Another thing I had to do was decide....NO EXCUSES! I did NOT accept excuses from myself. "Just one." Nope! "I'll really quit tomorrow" Nope! "I've had a stressful day and I deserve it." Nope! I told myself that ahead of time and it helped.

I didn't have one cigarette after I decided to quit, not even a puff.

You can do it Dan! Keep trying!!!
