Stripped Pump Mounting Nut & Bolt

Last summer after I just installed my new prop and went to mount the pump assembly to the hull, I stripped out one of the nuts in the hull and the bolt. Now that I have it all apart I need to fix this before remounting it again.

I was planning on re-tapping the hole but I'm uncertain as to which tap size to use. I know it is an M10 but what pitch? Will simply retapping the hole and bolt fix this?

Any suggestion on the best way to solve this problem?

You have to epoxy/fiberglass some kind of insert in there. Tapping a bigger hole in the fiberglass won't last 2 seconds.

The pump insert is mounted from the other side and can be replaced. (I have used ones) If it is not spinning in place, you can try to drill and tap it.

It's definitely not spinning as I had to wrench the hell out of it just to get the bolt out and the insert isn't moving.

helicoil is a stainless threaded insert that you screw into the damaged part.
i think you'd be better off going to a machine shop if you haven't done one before.
any decent machine shop can do it correctly for a few $$ quickly.

retaping the current thread will probably not work and do not drill it now!but if yes, same size as the oem bolt.

you can just try to run the original size tap into the threads to see if they will clean up. i thought I had toasted the pump insert on my SXR, but tried the proper size tap and the original insert came back to life.

its probably the insert spinning in the hull, if so its a relatively easy fix, just get a 1.5 inch drill and buy a new insert (I know wamiltons has them....maybe riva too), drill above...run a small drill from the pump side though the hull into the tray, then use that hole as the center for your 1.5 hole (which you will drill from the tray side to access the insert)....you can epoxy the new insert in, then seal up the hole real well....

if its the threads that are bad just drill up a size and re-tap (a drill/tap chart online will make it easy to find the size (just use a poplular size so you dont spend a lot on a tap))...and run a larger size bolt....

re-tapping the same size will not help....also thats not the best place to be using a helicoil......

Well the insert is not spinning at all, it just has some bad threads. So drilling it out and going a size bigger would probably be the quickest and easiest remedy.

just look up the basic major dia of the bolt (if its an m10 its 10mm) so you want your next tap size up to use a 10mm dia drill bit....only has to be close in this case....I would find the closest standard thread ...

oh, and I forgot, I think those inserts are brass, so be carefull drilliing, as regular drill bits want to grab in brass... which could end up breaking those inserts loose afterall

What type of drill bits do you recommend so that I can ensure that it doesn't grab the brass insert?
