Thursday update on kyle

Just thought I would pass along the news.

"We had some good news this morning on Kyle. A test was run to check for ligament damage in his neck and the results were good- there is no injury. As a result, his neck brace was removed and this will enable him to be more comfortable. An EEG was also run to check brain activity but we won't get those results until tomorrow. There are reasons to be thankful regarding his condition. He does not have any spinal/neck damage. He is making purposeful movements with both legs and his left arm (he moves his right arm but not as much). Our biggest concern is that Kyle has still not opened his eyes or woken up. That is the most difficult thing for us. The doctors say this is not uncommon but it is very difficult to be patient. Kyle has several things in his favor- his age, determination and friends and family that are pulling for him. We need to remember that the timing for waking up will be determined by Kyle and God and, boy, that's some dynamic duo! The hospital gave us an information booklet on brain injuries. There is an inspiring letter in the booklet from a person who suffered a brain injury in a car accident. She was in a coma for 24 days, intensive care for 30 days and hospitalized for a number of months. Her injury left her with both physical and cognitive problems. But here is the inspiring part. She had an impressive recovery, returned to college and graduated with a degree in Occupational Therapy! With that story in mind, please continue to pray for Kyle's full recovery."

Continue to keep this guy in your thoughts. He needs as much positive energy going his way as possible.

he isn't fully awake yet...but he opened his eyes 6 times yesterday and looked around. It took two nurses washin his backside when he first opened them and looked around. Keep this guy in your thoughts. We're over the hump now and recovery from here may be fast or slow who knows...only matters that he gets there. I just can't wait till he gets out fo the hospital but that may not be for a while.

At this point on the 1 to eight level scale called the rancho scale that determines brain activity...kyle is at a 3....he can sit in a chair but that is about all. he tried to itch his nose today so some things are working. I feel for the guy...he still has a catheder in. Ouch.

Hopefully he stabilizes soon so they can airlift him back to kzoo.

In Proverbs 3:6 it says, "Always let him lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow." (And yes, I had to look it up to get the passage). This road for us may be uncertain but God is our mapquest.

Is he cognitive?

Does he recognize speech?

yes he is responsive. Only to young people really though....not to the male nurses at all. But he is much like a baby right now. He really fried his circuits as his ma says.

Sounds about like I was. I could hardly talk and the whole right side was paralyzed (a computer smashed into the right side of my head during the accident causing the coma). Forget about writing. I was wheelchair bound till the last few weeks I was there.

I wonder why they gave him a cathader.... They just threw a diaper on me, I think.

There's still plenty of hope he'll pull completely out of this. Can he swallow yet or they still got that damned tube in his throat?

He ain't gonna say anything but grunts and groans until they take that tube out. Even then he'll have a hard time at first.

He still have that damned feeding tube in? I hated that damned tube and the crap they poured down it. Nasty brown liquid that gave me stinky gas. And they called it 'good for me'. :puke:

Never heard of a tube to suck up muccus...

A tube is sometimes left in until they are confident that he will be able to cough up any secretions from the throat. They can use a suction tube inside the tracheal tube on a regular schedule to help keep him from getting pneumonia. They get the trach tube out as soon as they can.

Yep. They only use the suction intermittently to keep things clear. It's the clear canister attached to the wall that has a long hose attached to it. This hose is pulled over and the trach suctioned clear. Usually at least 3-4 times daily, sometimes more, occasionally less.

catheders suck though. I had to have one when they cut out my stomach and pulled out my intestines to get at my lymphnodes. I nearly passed out when they pulled that long ass tube out.

:grouphug:

I am confident he will continue to make progress everyday.
