Painting a motor...

Whats the best and easiest/cheapest way to go about painting a motor?
Do you have to split everything apart, and spray it one part of a time? Or can I just take off the carb and exhaust manifold and spray it? How about prep, does it need to be sanded or primes? Obviously it would need high temperature paint.
I would like to rattle can it, but I want it to last somewhat, and to look good. I know they make high temperature rattle paints for grills and stuff, so I guess I'm wondering if I can just spray it down a couple coats and call it a day.
How about painting a pipe? I have a coffman pipe, the stinless steel/aluminum looking one, are you able to paint those?
I know my old Factory Pipe was painted before on the whole chamber, just wondering if this will work.
Thanks!

dude I have been thinking about painting my motor. I just don't see how it will look any better unless you spend alot of time and money. Everyone that I have seen that just taped it up did not look that good. I have a buddy that spent a lot of time and got his powder coated and it looked great. He had already had it all apart. Have fun. I think that it was only $150 and the tear down time.

the engine is water cooled, it does not see temps like what would be for an automotive engine. you should not need hi temp paint unless you just want the piece of mind.

is there any corrosion on your motor? if so dissasemble and bead blast to get it all off and the left over paint.
clean really good
i use a zink primer kinda $ but the zink will stop any corrosion
it comes in rattle can to
after primer dries
rattle can over it in your favorite color
*bling*
let it dry
best of luck and shoot us some pics

I used High Temp Engine paint from an Auto Parts store. About $8.00. Worked killer. Lasted one season so far and still looks good. :woot:I just cleaned it with purple power cleaner and a scrub brush first

(Mine was taken apart at the time)

Here's one I sprayed with High-Temp Aluminum Paint.

No motor tear-down, just masking tape and a little time.

I taped off the exhaust holes on the cyl and the intake & blased the outside of the motor clean to remove any old corrosion and old paint. Used the zinc primer as mentioned above, and used engine paint ontop of the zinc primer.
I did not blast the head & flywheel clean & prime like I did the rest of the motor and I noticed it chips and wears easier.

I use engine paint from the auto parts store it comes in every color you could want. I clean the motor with parts cleaner and wire brush then acetone, mask off what i want to protect then go to town with the color. My oldest build I painted has about 5 seasons on it and still looks great.

Im gonna give it a shot then, I think Ill try some Krylon or something, should I shoot some primer paint on it first? Or just degrease really good?

Don't use regular krylon. Get a engine paint or brake caliper paint. The finish will hold up alot better and it only costs a couple dollars more.

do yourself a favor and mix a little m.e.k. and mineral spirits (where gloves OUTSIDE) and use a scrubrush or scotch brite pad to degrease and clean the engine first. then mask off or use vasoline in hard to reach places.best to do several thin coats rather that fewer heavier ones. i used gloss enamel on my old 650sx (see buildups) and the paint still looked good two and a half years later. btw i just repainted my factry pipe on my 750sx last week with some stuff i got from lowes called hammer finish. it almost looks original, except it scratches a little easier..
