now in andrews defense, hes right. EVERYONE sucks at surf riding, even his latest video was a let down to me, and thats his 100%. thats why its so much fun, its a limitless environment of progression. if you think you got it, your wrong, and your going to get humbled soon. try to set a good example and thats all you need to get across.
definitely not 100% sense i had ridden for 6months before but ur right in small gutless waves thats about it but im not really sure what else u could even do...the difference is doing it when its overhead and hollow..hitting the lip on a 2ft dribbler is easy its going up and hitting it when its dredging seperates peoples riding..i could have edited that vid into a min of all the best stuff but like i said in the thread the riding wasnt worth doing so..nothing special just us messing around getting the feel or the ski again..im sure u saw me at pismo i was riding like crap, im rusty..not to mention it has nothing to do with how i ride..i remember going to the first surfslam when i first started and thinking wow these guys suck until i saw jk and taylor ride and a couple other guys...
back to the original controversy of the thread about why i think straps are better: its all about leverage..despite certain people saying but footholds feeelllls better bro! heres an actual example of when being able to lift your ski off the water at will is an advantge....
both of these moves are basically the same...one front side, one backside...
the forces and technique transfers over to most moves you do on a ski in the surf...
look at the second and third shots..all the momentum of the ski, wave and rider are going one direction..to change direction in a split second u have to be pulling up really hard on the front strap...ive never ridden a ski with a front hold u can get enough leverage on cause u have to ride with your foot parallel with the ski and you only have your toes to pull up with...that moment is the same as when ur going up and over a wave or big whitewater the same forces apply..
once u are on top of the lip u dont have much hookup and you need to be able to suck the ski up underneath u when u start dropping back down..you can use the rear strap to bring the tail up because u dont want to go nosehigh..it looks ugly and u cant land with the momentum u need to keep going and not have the whitewater catch u...this is pretty much the same idea as when ur riding down a wave and it gets steep unexpectedly..u see most guys hanging their ass off the back when all u need to do it pull up and air down into the flats to safety..on more than one occasion ive been panic reving it and puling up as hard as i can to keep the nose from pearling..
also when u mess up u can keep your feet locked in and lay over and bounce your hip/shoulder off the water and throttle out...when your feet are in the tray solid u can save the majority of your messups..
im not saying u cant do that stuff with front/rear holds or whatever but your not locked in as good so its not as easy..
another reason i like a front strap is so i can ride with my front foot further back than it would be if it was in a FFH...when your foots back a bit u can run a longer pole which gives u more leverage...thats more personal preference but for me it helps...
so thats my reason why i think they work better..figured id actually give an example instead of just stating that it feels better..
