why do you care about where someone else places their feet? is it your problem? is it holding you back?

heres my 2% for all you bickering over nothing

its mostly about style, and the commitment to your style. this can be said about everyones personal choices in their setup.
straps set up aggressive surf stance are not supposed to be the easiest way to ride overall, but in the surf when your using them its a must have for the style.
same goes for hulls, when you commit your time to learning everything on a superjet and try another hull you will feel like its a joke until you take the time to learn and understand the differences and use them to your advantage.
dont hold yourself back from your full potential.

now in andrews defense, hes right. EVERYONE sucks at surf riding, even his latest video was a let down to me, and thats his 100%. thats why its so much fun, its a limitless environment of progression. if you think you got it, your wrong, and your going to get humbled soon. try to set a good example and thats all you need to get across.

and so you judge them? nice. so by your definition if you dont ride at pro level you are doing it wrong? you can only ever improve your skills by learning from trial and error. so a lot of doing something well comes from learning what not to do. somewhere along the way I think some people have lost their ability to see what others can do and only focus on what they cant do.

why do you care about where someone else places their feet? is it your problem? is it holding you back?

unfortunately guys on here take advise as criticism for some reason... i ride moto, im not very good...i can ride the track and jump the jumps but im not fast by any means...a few of my buddies are..when they tell me to hold my leg up higher in the turns or dont sit down in a section or whatever i listen i dont get offended cause they think i suck haha

idk about u but the better i am at something the more fun im having for the most part..

b3is...they looked like the most retarded to alot of us...lol

stanton...well put my man...you are much better at saying it with tender loving care.......lol pretty much the way everything has to be worded around here to not swell up anyones vag.

Andrew...I think its just more fun for them to see it as criticism....most here couldnt separate it from advice if it were slapping them in the face

That's because a majority of advice given on a forum (any forum) is utter crap and hard to distinguish from good advice.

Those that yell the loudest (or have the most posts, hah!) are listened to. The guys that know what they are talking about are drowned out by nonsense and soon stop posting altogether.

not speaking of myself here by any means, but when most of the best in the world do something a certain way or say its a certain way......is there really a debate on this specific subject?

Stan and Jake were both giving me hard time about riding in the holds. I can ride SS and I like it. When I started riding skis it was all about SS at Fiesta Island Point loma or Oside then I moved away from the beach. Riding on the river chasing boats has had an effect on my riding.

Bottom line is you guys are right riding waves SS can be waaaay more fun and gives a certain style also.
I do want to get better at riding SS, we will be moving back to the beach in the next year so I gues it will happen, or I may just look silly til I cant ride anymore.

definitely not 100% sense i had ridden for 6months before but ur right in small gutless waves thats about it but im not really sure what else u could even do...the difference is doing it when its overhead and hollow..hitting the lip on a 2ft dribbler is easy its going up and hitting it when its dredging seperates peoples riding..i could have edited that vid into a min of all the best stuff but like i said in the thread the riding wasnt worth doing so..nothing special just us messing around getting the feel or the ski again..im sure u saw me at pismo i was riding like crap, im rusty..not to mention it has nothing to do with how i ride..i remember going to the first surfslam when i first started and thinking wow these guys suck until i saw jk and taylor ride and a couple other guys...

back to the original controversy of the thread about why i think straps are better: its all about leverage..despite certain people saying but footholds feeelllls better bro! heres an actual example of when being able to lift your ski off the water at will is an advantge....

both of these moves are basically the same...one front side, one backside...

the forces and technique transfers over to most moves you do on a ski in the surf...

look at the second and third shots..all the momentum of the ski, wave and rider are going one direction..to change direction in a split second u have to be pulling up really hard on the front strap...ive never ridden a ski with a front hold u can get enough leverage on cause u have to ride with your foot parallel with the ski and you only have your toes to pull up with...that moment is the same as when ur going up and over a wave or big whitewater the same forces apply..

once u are on top of the lip u dont have much hookup and you need to be able to suck the ski up underneath u when u start dropping back down..you can use the rear strap to bring the tail up because u dont want to go nosehigh..it looks ugly and u cant land with the momentum u need to keep going and not have the whitewater catch u...this is pretty much the same idea as when ur riding down a wave and it gets steep unexpectedly..u see most guys hanging their ass off the back when all u need to do it pull up and air down into the flats to safety..on more than one occasion ive been panic reving it and puling up as hard as i can to keep the nose from pearling..

also when u mess up u can keep your feet locked in and lay over and bounce your hip/shoulder off the water and throttle out...when your feet are in the tray solid u can save the majority of your messups..

im not saying u cant do that stuff with front/rear holds or whatever but your not locked in as good so its not as easy..

another reason i like a front strap is so i can ride with my front foot further back than it would be if it was in a FFH...when your foots back a bit u can run a longer pole which gives u more leverage...thats more personal preference but for me it helps...

so thats my reason why i think they work better..figured id actually give an example instead of just stating that it feels better..

New sig line !

nice post andrew. makes sense to anyone willing to open their eyes... I use a ffh and and turfed it tight to my kinda ride shoe,I use it at a 45 deg angle.it covers 3/4 of my foot and top ankle. I can roll surf stance with it and never come out. Its my rear foot that seems to need the strap tighter. Looking at taylor and jk ride,it never seemed like they had much more than 2 inched pass their toes under the strap...

I dont need convincing that ss is better, pretty sure I never said it wasnt. I have seen a few guys that ride almost entirely with feet in holds all the time. They seem to be able to do it and are comfortable with it. So who cares? maybe they wont progress, maybe they just dont want to, I dont know. I just know its not my place or anyone elses to say what is right for them. If they ask for advice I would give it.
