X-metal steering installation question - need to modify pump?

I'm installed the UMI bearing kit and X-metal steering on my SJ
tonight. I have played around with the steering adjustment and
cannot get the turnplate to contact the stop in both directions.
I am running the turnplate in the outermost hole for maximum
throw. I popped the stop out and turned it sideways, but I still
can't adjust the steering. The problem is not the cable, the problem
is the plastic steering nozzle on the pump hits the side of the pump
and won't turn far enough to the right. Left is fine.

Does using the outermost hole require taking the nozzle off the
pump and trimming some off of it so it will turn fully?

That seems to be the only solution.

Thanks.

you have to cut the steering cable if I am not mistaken......... with the shorter turn plate you have to cut the cable to match...... believe you cut the pump end...... Not sure if it is mentioned on the XMetal Site.

http://xmetalworks.com/install_handlepole.html

It is mentioned. Cut from the turn plate side, not the pump side........

I can see where this would help at the turnplate. That would let me tighten
the adjustment in a little farther, and it appears it WOULD contact the stop
in both directions.

BUT it seems like I won't have enough cable at the pump end to adjust
out enough to align the steering.

crap....... I thought you had the pole also..........

not sure on the stock pole.............

sounds like you need to notch the steering nozzle..........

you coming to Alatoona next week?
Sorry, BK, not this year.

I WILL, however, be at Daytona 2008. Already have the whole thing
planned out. Taking two weeks, visiting the parents in Ocala, and
timing it out to be in Daytona at just the right time. :woot:

move it to the middle hole
Yeah, that's where I have it now, and it is all adjusted and installed just fine.

Does it REALLY make that much difference in the speed of the steering
by moving to the outer hole from the middle hole??

Enough difference to mess with cutting into the pump nozzle and the
chinpad to make it fit vs. just installing it and being done with it?

Yeah notch your steering nozzle, notch your chinpad, and you will need to loosen the nut and adjust the connector on the steering cable to get proper alignment and even throw (I adjust the pump side). I've never had to cut it but maybe because I'm only on a -2 pole :dunno:

Yes, the adjustment in steering cable pivot makes a world of difference in maximizing your throw.

I run a full XMW setup (pole, bracket, steering) and didn't cut the cable.
I run the middle hole on the steering plate, moved the steering hole in the nozzle, and clearance the nozzle.

can you hit stop without being connect to steering nozzle? that's first question boogy is going to ask

Yes, if I screw the adjustment at the steering plate in ALL THE WAY
until it bottoms out (and only about 1/4" of thread is still showing
on the steering cable) I can contact both sides of the stop (with
the stop turned sideways).

Then, if I adjust the pump end enough that the nozzle doesn't hit the
side of the pump when making a right turn, the nozzle is not lined up
with the bars. If the bars are pointed straight ahead, the nozzle
is pointing off at a bit of an angle.

The only way it appears that I can get the bars and nozzle perfectly
aligned and still contact the stop is to notch the nozzle a bit.

I just wanted to verify that this was something other people were
doing and it was necessary to do in some cases.

Thanks for all the replies.

how do you like the set up?? I still have to cut my pole down, but looking at the xm setup of the blowsion one.

I just got it installed yesterday, and haven't ridden with it yet to make a judgement call. It feels good while standing on the ski on the trailer and
making VROOM VROOM noises, though.

I shortened my pole 1.5" and temporarily bolted it back together (didn't use any epoxy on it yet). Want to see how this feels first. The X-metal steering
itself shortens things by 2.5" vs. stock, so I'm at -4 total right now.

IMO, notching your steering nozzle for the extra throw is one of the very first things anyone on a superjet should do. It makes a world of a difference, and is essentially a free upgrade.
