Surfriding Welding Midshaft to Driveshaft

Hey.. SJ running gear pre 08..

What would the response be if i said i was thinking about welding my midshaft to my driveshaft to get me though a weekend of riding untill my new OEM parts come as it's flogged out twice due to bad alligment.

And can it be done/ How could be all be installed once welded?

Please don't hound me as im aware it's a bad idea but need some advice.

Don't know about welding but you could drill through both shafts and through-bolt them.
If they are trashed anyway, why not experiment. How about epoxy instead of grease ?

Welding it will be easy, But im wondering if i can some how push my pump towards the engine buy unbolting it, so the drive shaft sticks into the engine bay.. then sticking the midshaft on, then welding her up...

Thoughts..

I don't think it will work either way there is a tube going through the firewall that the driveshaft sits in and I think it would be near impossible if not impossible to put the midshaft section of the shaft through there and properly press it through the bearings in the midshaft, it would be possible to go the other way but the you will have to somehow assemble the pump inside the pump cavity, and though not impossible I would say that it's going to be extremely difficult, and very cramped quarters. No way you could Properly seal things.

If you were to accomplish this, the only method of removing either the pump or midshaft would be to remove one of the shafts from the bearings and that would be exceptionally difficult. Another option would be to weld the shaft to the midshaft and then cut the driveshaft in the middle and weld a coupler on one end of the shaft and spline the other. Neither are great options though.

I understand the desire to ride for a special weekend but I don't think the time and effort required will be worth it. More importantly though, can you fix the alignment that's causing the problem in the first place? If you were able to accomplish the welding, the power alignment will get transferred into the engine and pump.

That wouldn't work at all. Whatever quick fix you're trying to accomplish would be 10X the trouble in the long run. Theres a thread on here by Oxnard111 which explains exactly how to align your engine and drive shaft which any one can follow. He did a A+ job of discribing how to do it correctly (I don't know where it is, hopefully someone will post the link) Until someone makes a Kawi style pump and drive line for a Yamaha we're stuck with the midshaft and alignment issues.

I know of a blaster with stripped shafts and JB weld worked so well that it would not come apart...It ran fine like this... Clean both ends with brake cleaner and JB that sucka !

you would assemble the ski with broken shafts and then weld from inside the engine bay through the centre shaft. down through the middle of it. Would I do it or recommend it hell no but it would be possible. you would need to be careful with the heat in the shaft on the centre bearing seals.

To get it off simply cut the drive shaft in half. Rough ?? if you were careful I would call it rough this is much worse

waaayyyyyyyyy too much work...

clean off grease, smear with JB weld..reinsert shafts....

we have a blaster here in auggie thats been like this for going on 3 years.........

just realize that if you this the shafts will need to be cut if you need to replace pump shoe, prop etc etc...

Ok cool. Thats a worth while trying I guess. heck why not the shafts are stuffed whats the worst that could happen.
They get more stuffed.
When you need to get the pump out you will need a plasma. but other than that all good

Ok..

I have JB'd the hell out of it..
Stuck wire in the grove's on all 4 sides to help pack it out a touch, and welded it from inside the midshaft...
I got a center punch and belted it from behind the coupler and the center popped st8 out allowing me to stick my welder down the hole..

Will chuck it all back in tomoro and rip some backies on sunday.

Orded a new midshaft, Drive shaft, pump bearing kit and midshaft bearing kit arriving next week.

So my problems will all be fixed buy the end of the week..

Wish me luck
