Weight Or Power?

im looking at making some changes what do you guys think is better more power or less weight

option 1 put a 5mm stroker in a stock hull
or
option 2 get an xft and put my 760 in that

opinions please guys im looking more towards the hull as its less maintanance

here is how i see it.

Big motors break more often and cost more money
hulls dont really break.

for flatwater i'd say jump on that xfc. down the line i'm sure you'll be looking into getting both. if you start with the motor and it keeps failing you will never save up for the hull. if you start with the hull you can start saving up for the motor...

http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/20884 is this exact question.

Here's what I posted there:

Do the power/weight ratio to get a good comparison.

Let's say 760 = 125hp and a 5mm = 150hp and a normal oem hull is 320lbs and a XFT is 50 lbs lighter at 270

760/oem = .39 hp/lb
760/xft = .463
5mm/oem = .469

So, basically the same, though the reliability is a good point. Also, it depends on what power you have now and other stuff.

The hull will no doubt give you far more performance for your $.

I dont know all the math on power to weight, but If you compare a 110lb OEM hull to a 60lb XFT flatwater hull..... Im pretty sure it would take more then a 5mm stroker to equal the 50lb lighter power to weight ratio.

And as mentioned you will stay far more reliable.

Also you could get a extra set of Domes, and set it up for Higher compression and race fuel when you want to compete, or start going bigger.

My 2 cent.

Stoxy,

I was where you are now a year ago or so (see above post) and I went for a 6mm Stroker and Full Specs in the end, as nice as they are and as hard as they hit they ain't no comparison to a lighter XFT hull. Springys XFT with a ported 760 and Full Specs is way more agile than my stock hull with Stroker and feels much stronger - all the other items we run are the same (compression, carbs, ignition etc)..

We're both at Tatt w/e after next - jump on my boat and see what you think of a 6mm Lamey stroker of it helps ya?

If I could turn back the clock I'd be riding an XFT right now...

IMO a B piped 701 with light flywheel and hooker prop on a light weight hull is the combo to have.

I don't need any more power than that. Just less weight.

I wouldn't get too fussed about the hp/lb ratio, as posted previously the end result is really about the same for your two options...besides, you're not building a car to take to the drag races. :) I'd worry more about what you want to do w/ the ski, so my guess would be you'd want lower inertia / more agility, etc which would mean to go for the XFT. Add on the issues of maintenance, etc and I think the choice is even more clear.
