Why does Vimeo take vids with older codecs and make them look like garbage and vids with new codecs come out in HQ???? and clear...

The HQ vids online are not anywhere NEAR as clear as my non HQ vids in AVI form...

Sorry, more of a rant than a question. They are just douchebags. :wavey:

Its all in how they deal with the compression techniques of each codec, and how much time they spend sorting out each codec... obviously the .mp4 h.264 codec gets alot more dev time because it is used by ALOT of people, whereas an older flash codec or something just get worked on enough to be passable.

If you have lossless .avi files DJ, why not just re-render with a newer codec and repost?

I have to update my pinnacle...it doesn't let me choose the codec. I can't even edit mp4s....I have fallen too far behind the times! I just put it on (highest quality) and it comes out as an avi. I thought avi files were good....and they are really clear, they just get turned to garbage on youtube and vimeo.

Yeah .avi files are really better for internal use or for keeping a high rez copy of something... an update is definitely in order if it allows you to pick your encoding options, this will open up a whole world of stuff to you...

I have something called classic media player...just updated it. Workin great. I'll be running mp4s now instead of AVI....going to do some experiments to see if the mp4s look better on vimeo...

The AVIs actually look better on my computer, but take up wayyy more room.

I am editing Franks HD vid from the 8 foot day. Damn, this is the first vid slowing down my machine...is it because it is a quicktime file? or because it's HD?

could be both... quicktime files can be deceptive on a pc because the wrapper is always .mov but the codec can be a few different ones, some work better than others... and it could be because its hd. check your file size on the content you are working with, if it is substantially larger than what your normal file sizes are i would lean more towards that as being the problem. you can always take and run the files through something like mpeg stream to get them to run better, i have to do this with every piece of HD gopro footage i get because the audio codec that is native to the footage does not play well with premiere lol
